Valentine's Lesson Ideas for Language Arts

There are many ways to help students develop reading and comprehension skills. Here are Valentine's Day lesson ideas for language arts that add a little fun to the learning process.

Rewrite Valentine's Day Cards
Detach half of your Valentine's Day cards to separate the text from its cover illustration or photo. Give each student a Valentine's Day card cover with instructions to write their own greeting using their most recent list of vocabulary words. These words do not have to be related to the Valentine's holiday and should be taken from previous lesson plans in your curriculum. Allow students to write their greeting on the opposite side of these card covers. You can also provide a blank sheet of card stock that matches the size of their greeting cards. This will allow students to make their own Valentine's Day cards using a stapler, tape or glue for re-attaching the back cover.

Valentine's Day Sentence Exercise
Print a worksheet that lists the phrase "Valentine's Day" in a vertical line on one side of the page. Draw a line next to each letter in the phrase. Duplicate the worksheet on pink paper and pass copies out to students. Instruct your students to write a sentence that starts with each letter in the "Valentine's Day" phrase using their most recent list of vocabulary words. Each sentence should include at least one vocabulary word from your current or recent language arts lesson. The finished worksheets should have 13 completed sentences such as "Very nice gifts were given to me last year" and "Apples are red but not as sweet as Valentine's Day candy".

Love Stories Using Valentine's Day Vocabulary Words
Instruct students to write a short love story using vocabulary words from your most recent lesson plans. Use blank journals for this Valentine's Lesson plan. Allow students to decorate their short story booklets using collage materials. While illustration with crayons is an option, this activity should not distract students from the main purpose of language arts development. Teachers can also use single sheets of notebook paper when planning these Valentines lesson ideas for language arts. Duplicate one main worksheet that includes a vocabulary list and attach copies to the notebook papers before handing them out to students.

Another option is to skip your current vocabulary words in favor of a more holiday themed lesson idea for language arts. Make a list of required Valentine's Day terms for use in the student's short story assignment. Holiday fiction writing can help students develop skills in pronunciation, reading and sentence structure. Many classroom bonuses can be added to these Valentine's lesson ideas for language arts. Help students learn to improve their public speaking skills by reading a finished short story out loud in front of the class.
