Natural Sleeping Aids Could Be Your Answer to Sleepless Nights

Natural sleeping aids might be something for you to consider if you have had it with insomnia. Valerian root, kava root, melatonin and L-tryptophan are four natural sleeping aids that just might help you enjoy a good nights rest and renew your energy for a new day.

Natural Sleeping Aids-Valerian Root

Valerian root is a natural herb that is used to treat anxiety and as a sedative. You can purchase it at drug stores, health food stores or online. Take it in herbal teas or pill form. Valerian roots are studied in conjunction with natural sleeping aids and there has been evidence that it is beneficial.

Repeated use over time helps you drift off to sleep quickly and provides a good, healthy nights sleep. Valerian root has been used in the treatment of migraines in addition to that of anxiety.

Natural Sleeping Aids-Kava Root

Kava root is grown among the islands of Fiji and Hawaii. It's a mood enhancer and sedative. Natural sleeping aids such as kava root can affect people differently. Some patients that cannot sleep because of anxiety have found relief, while others have slept, but had disturbing nightmares.

There are concerns about using kava root if you are currently taking medications that affect the liver or using alcohol. Problems of possible liver damage occurring if used in excess of three days a week. It would be wise to check with your physician before self-treating with natural sleeping aids.

Natural Sleeping Aids-Melatonin

Melatonin is naturally produced in your body. It can be purchased in liquid form or in tablets. Many people use this supplement when all else fails with other natural sleeping aids. It is considered safe for use in low doses. Take a half-hour to one hour before bed.

Melatonin is a hormone secreted from the Pineal gland affecting waking and sleeping cycles. Production is affected by shorter winter days and periods of low- light. This could be why some people have more trouble sleeping during winter months. Older people with insomnia may be reacting to less melatonin production as they age.

Natural Sleeping Aids-L-tryptophan

Unlike some of the other natural sleeping aids mentioned earlier, you can get L-tryptophan in foods that you eat. L-tryptophan may be found in both animal or plant proteins. It has been used successfully in the treatment of sleep apnea and insomnia. In addition to natural sleeping aids, there has been positive research for treating depression, (SAD) Seasonal affective disorder and (ADHD) Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder.

L-tryptophan is found in poultry, milk, egg whites, bananas, almonds, sour cherries and turkey meat.

Valerian root, kava root, melatonin and L-tryptophan are all natural sleeping aids that may or may not work for you. These natural sleeping aids do seem to have potential for relieving sleeping disorders. Consider side effects or contact a doctor when considering natural sleeping aids.
