Valspar Paints - How to Choose the Right Color

Beth Inman
When the end of winter draws near and the promise of Spring is in the air, spring fever creeps in and that always starts me thinking about a spring makeover. Not for me, although I would love one, but for my kitchen. The kitchen in my home, and many others, is the heart of my home. It must capture the right mood, the right feeling. I want my kitchen to feel warm, but lively, clean and welcoming. Any mood and feeling can be captured with the right paint choices.

There is no reason to spend a small fortune for interior paint. There are several paint companies that offer interior paints in a wide spectrum of colors. Accused by my family, of painting so often I have decreased the interior size of our home, I have tried most of them. Perhaps my new favorite is Valspar paints. Valspar paint colors come from things we see around us. The soft, bring green of a new bean can be seen in Valspar's color, Beansprout. Valspar paint colors is sold at Lowe's for around $20 a gallon in most areas.

When choosing a paint color, consider all aspects of your kitchen. What mood do you wish to evoke in the room? What is the style of the cabinetry? What finish are the appliances? The floor treatments are an equally important factor when choosing paint colors and finishes.

Paints are available in several finishes; matte, egg-shell, glossy, semi-glossy, and satin. Satin and semi-glossy paints clean better, and in my experience, have proven to be the best choices for kitchens. Less than perfect walls should stay away from glossy paints, and in this instance I would suggest a satin finish.

If your room is long and narrow, try painting a lighter shade of the color you choose on the longer walls and a shade just a little darker on the shorter walls. This will give the illusion of a larger room.

If a warm kitchen is what you are after, Valspar has a nice selection of warm colors like red, yellow and orange. A full spectrum of these colors allows you to infuse warmth and energy into any room.

Brighter colors like yellows and greens will create a lively atmosphere, while lavenders and pinks will lend a feel of Victorian softness to a kitchen. Pinks and lavenders are not typical paint colors for a kitchen, but with white appliances and cabinetry the result can be very pleasant.

Choosing a paint color is a very important step toward creating the right environment. Most paint stores offer free paint samples. Pick up 3-4 paint samples of each color and place them around the room, beside appliances, under cabinets and even on the floor. Live with them a few days and observe the differences in the colors as the light changes in the room.

The most important thing is that you enjoy the room you have created. If you find that it just isn't what you expected, change it. It is probably the most inexpensive makeover you can do!
