Values in Sports Today

Nicholas Ponte
A way to understand a culture is to look at their values. Values are things that are important to an individual or a group of people. Cultural values play a significant roll in the world we live in today. Many different countries have different cultural values, for example the country Spain takes soccer very seriously, and almost every person in that country loves the sport. On certain days of the week, family and friends gather around a TV or radio to watch or listen to the game that's being broadcasted, soccer is a very meaningful sport to them, and it is a part of their culture. In America there is not one dominating sport, but if I were to pick on I would choose football. Like in Spain on a certain day of the week American gather with friends and family to watch football games, and spend quality time with these people.

Sports create a giant impact on society. Sports reflect upon our society in so many different and unique ways. Before sports were a major part of society, children used to look up to their parents, and they parents would be role models for their children. As time went on this changed, it has now shifted that children look to athletes as role models. This can be both good and bad. If a kid's favorite player is Dennis Rodman and he sees him pushing around other players on the court and getting in trouble with the police before every game, the kid is going to think it is ok to do this. He is going to think its ok to push other people and get in trouble all the time because that's what winners do. That is just one way sports reflect upon society there are many different other ways, both good and bad, that we have to be careful of and make sure are kids aren't making bad choices.

Children these days should be getting the impression that sports aren't always just about winning and doing whatever it takes to win, it should show kids values. If a player on a team just cares about winning and will do any drastic measure to achieve that. These players' images should not be portrayed on children, it gives them the wrong idea of the sport and it takes away the sports values. Children should see that sports aren't just about winning its about the love for playing the game, and what's the fair way to win, such like working with other people on the team to strive for the accomplishment of winning. Sports influence kids in so many different ways, and what kids should be getting from sports is how to cope with other players on the team to earn the win in a fair way, and portray a good image to kids, so they do the same.
