Valve Vows No Playstation Move or 3D Support Until Portal 3

It is just like Valve, creator of hit games like Half-Life and Team Fortress II, to spark news in the gaming world while simultaneously whetting the appetites of its fans. After initially saying that the complexity of the Sony Playstation 3 makes game developing for it too difficult and expensive, it looks like it might actually consider some games for the PS3. But that does not mean that it will fully support all those newfangled features that the monstrous gaming behemoth has such as the motion controller Move or 3D support. Valve's Dave Lombardi stated that "[Move and 3D] will have to wait for Portal 3 or another title. We won't be supporting those in Portal 2."

Back that up a little... Portal 3?

In 2007, Valve's Portal was already one the greatest games of all time. It was an easy game to play but fun to master. It was full of imaginative puzzles, dry humor, the right amount of play time to avoid overstaying its story, a humorously evil villain, a catchphrase that would become a great Internet meme (Yes, the cake is a lie), and even a quirky song to end the game. It was an excellent stand-alone game that is still fun to play despite beating it three years ago since the portal game play element offered so many new things to try out in solving the puzzles and listening to the one-liners. Naturally the players wanted a sequel. The announcement, teaser shots or game play, and subsequent delays of Portal 2 keeps people wanting more as they eagerly wait for the game.

This announcement about working reluctantly with the Playstaion 3 feels less about working with Sony and more about leaking plans of making Portal into a trilogy. Has Valve planned this out from the start of the Portal games? Valve is already reputed for its excellent games that come from its planning team, so we can expect Portal to be a trilogy of masterpieces. In any case, the gamers are pleased and are pretty much likely to forget where and how the rest of Portal is released. Incorporating the Sony Move could be a good move, though I am not sure how 3D would improve the game aside from giving new players even more to get disoriented about.

Given that Portal 3 is announced, it begs to ask how much Valve is holding back in Portal 2 and what new puzzles, game elements, and story that the two games will have in store. We do know GlaDOS is still alive at least.
