Vampire Pizza

Ted Nash
Vince Monroe and his girlfriend Wendy are seated on the couch watching tv in his mother's apartment when she screams from the other room.
"Vincent, dinner!"
Marlene Monroe is a petite woman in her early 40's. The couple gets up and goes into the dining room, where a large bowl of pasta, chicken, olive oil and garlic sits upon the table. The three of them sit down, pray, then begin to serve themselves. Wendy takes a bite and recoils slightly.
"Wow, this sure is garlicky."
"My Vincent LOVES garlic, besides, it's good for you." she replies, with a big smile on her face."I can't believe my baby boy is going to be 21 tomorrow. Time goes so fast."
Vince looks up from his bowl of pasta and smiles at his mother.
"This tastes great Ma. Thanks."
She smiles with pride, as they all resume eating.

Later, the dishes are cleared from the table. Remnants of birthday cake are seen on plates, when Vince looks at his watch.
"Well girls, I gotta go. You know how Uncle Sal gets when one of his employees is late."
Vince gets up, and his mother does as well. She goes into the kitchen and comes back with a box wrapped in a bow.
"Before you go Vincent, this is for you."
Vince walks over to his mom, opens the package, and pulls out a large cross on a chain. He looks surprised at how big it is.
"Wow, that's a big cross. Thanks mom."
He puts the cross back in the box.
"Vincent, put it on. I want to see how it looks."
He takes the cross and places it over his head, then looks in the mirror.
"What do you think, Ma?"
His mother walks over and touches the cross and looks in her sons eyes.
"I want you to promise that you will wear this cross all night tonight."
Vince looks puzzled.
"But Ma, I gotta work, it's just gonna get in the way."
His mother grabs him by the shirt, and glares at him.
"Please Vincent, for me."
He pauses for a second, then tries to fit the cross under his shirt. It barely fits and looks ridiculous.
"Okay Ma. Thanks again for the meal and the gift. l love you."
Marlene smiles as they walk out the door. After they're out of sight she has a worried look on her face.

Vince and Wendy are walking down the street, holding hands.
"What was with your mom and the necklace?"
Vince just shrugs his shoulders.
"I don't know. Sometimes Ma has a high sense of drama. Are you still gonna meet me at the shop at midnight? We can go out and get a drink with Paulie and celebrate my birthday right."
Wendy smiles and kisses him on the lips as the two of them have arrived in front of her house.
"I'll pick you up at 12 handsome. See you then."
He smiles as he watches her walk in the front door. She turns to wave at him.

Vince walks around the corner to a building with a large sign on the front that reads "Vampyros Pizza". He opens the screen door and walks in. Behind the counter is his Uncle Sal Fortunato and cousin Sal Jr. Uncle Sal is a grizzly bear of a man with black hair and a black mustache. Sal Jr. is a thinner version of his father.
"Sally what's up?"
Sal looks up from kneading dough, and speaks.
"Another night at Vampire Pizza."
Vince grabs an apron, and heads behind the counter. Sal Jr. notices the large cross under his t-shirt.
"What are you wearing under your shirt, a license plate?"
Vince laughs as he lifts up his shirt to show his cousin.
"No, it's a cross my mom gave me for my birthday."
Uncle Sal finishes putting a pizza in the oven.
"Hey birthday boy, go in the back and slice up 10 pounds of pepperoni."

Later in the evening, a little league team with the Vampyros Pizza name on their jerseys comes running through the door. Uncle Sal lights up when he sees them, and runs out from behind the counter.
"Hey kids. How'd you do tonight?"
The kids start screaming as the coach walks in behind them.
"Uncle Sal, you're looking at the first place team in the Pittsburgh Little League!"
Sal thrusts his fists in the air and screams, "All right! Way to go kids!"
Vince and Sal Jr. laugh as they watch Sal jump around with the kids.
"Who wants some Pizza!", Sal screams.
The kids shout in unison, "We do!"
Sal shouts to Vince. "I need two large pepperoni pizzas pronto!"
Vince begins to mold dough for the pizza. Sal Jr. walks over to him.
"So cuz, we going out for some drinks tonight to celebrate your birthday?"
Vince smiles and nods.
"Oh yeah, Wendy's going to meet us here at midnight, then we'll head to the bar."
Sal Jr. nods his head.
"We're gonna have a good time tonight."

A few hours pass, and the clock on the wall says 11:55 p.m. Vince is sweeping up behind the counter, when Wendy walks in. She greets him with a kiss.
"Hey babe, I missed you."
VInce smiles and says, "I missed you too. I should be done in a couple minutes. Have a seat."
Uncle Sal comes out of the back and sees Wendy.
"Hi Wendy."
She waves at him.
"We got anymore pickups Vince?"
He looks at the counter.
"No Uncle Sal."
Sal walks over to the front door and locks it.
"We're all locked up, I'll be in the back."
Vince nods over in Sal's direction, and resumes sweeping.

Outside of the restaurant, Marlene stands under a streetlight, nervously watching the entrance to the pizza shop. Suddenly, a figure appears from the shadows across the street. He seems to be watching the shop. She pulls a shotgun out from under her coat, and walks towards the figure slowly. As she approaches, the shadowy figure disappears back into the shadows. She stops. Suddenly, the figure of a man clad in black materializes behind her. She turns and sees the man who tried to kill her on more than one occaision when she was pregnant with her son.
"Victor!"
She screams, then tries to pulls the trigger. He quickly moves out of the way and disarms her.
"I won't let you kill my son!"
Victor holds her by the arms and drags her into an alley. She is still fighting him, when he speaks.
"Listen to me! Listen to me!"
She pauses for a moment as he looks in her eyes. He has long black hair and a pale complexion.
"I'm not here to kill your son. I'm here to protect him."

Vince comes out from behind the counter to sweep the dining area as the clock strikes midnight. He is startled to see a man clad in a black Members Only jacket sitting at one of the tables near the door. He stops in his tracks, and stares at the pasty skinned stranger with jet black hair combed straight back.
"Sorry mister, we're closed."
The stranger stares back at him, saying nothing.
"How did you get in here? I thought Sal locked the door." Vince goes over and checks the door.
It is still locked. Without a sound, the stranger is now standing directly behind Vince, who is startled again. Wendy gets up and goes in the back to get Sal.
"Geez mister. You scared me."
Vince moves away, and begins to sweep the floor. The man watches as he starts to clean, and he suddenly is standing in Vince's way again, staring into his eyes. Vince stops sweeping and grips the handle of his broom tightly while gritting his teeth.
"Look pal, if you don't get out of here now, there's going to be trouble. So why don't you take your vintage 1980's jacket, and get lost."
The two of them stare at each other for a few seconds.

Meanwhile, Marlene has walked to the front of the shop, and she peers in to see the familiar figure talking to her son. In a panic, she tries to get in the front door, and realizes its locked. She pulls out her shotgun and fires, blowing a hole where the deadbolt used to be. She kicks in the door, finding a startled Vince and the stranger. She levels the gun at the stranger, and growls,
"You!"
The stranger looks at her, and smiles.
"Hello Marlene. It looks like the years have treated you well."
By this time, Uncle Sal, who is holding a pistol, Sal Jr. and Wendy have emerged from the back. Uncle Sal is furious.
"What the hell is going on out here? Marlene you blew a hole in my door!"
He runs over to investigate the damage, then notices the stranger.
"Who the hell is this?"
Marlene looks like she's losing patience.
"Sal, shut up and let me handle this."
She takes her eyes off the stranger for a second, then when she looks back he is gone. Suddenly, he appears behind her, and knocks the gun her from her hands. Sal fires a shot into his chest. The stranger grabs his chest, and pulls the bullet out. Sal fires again and again, until he runs out of bullets. They have no effect. He tries to pistol whip the stranger, but he is easily thrown aside. Sal Jr. and Vince grab chairs and start beating the stranger, but with no effect. He throws them to the ground. He grabs Malene by the collar, and leans towards her neck. He opens his mouth, revealing a set of fangs as he inches closer and closer. Suddenly, the door swings open, and in comes Victor. The stranger stops and looks up.
"I am sorry Victor, we're closed for the evening."
Victor walks around until Marlene is between him and the stranger, then speaks.
"Put her down."
The stranger throws Marlene to the floor. Victor lunges at the stranger. They begin to bite each other and tear at each others clothes. Victor has the upper hand as he throws him off the pizza oven. He walks behind the counter, picks up the stranger and again throws him off the wall. The stranger lands next to Wendy, who is cowering in fear. He suddenly turns into a large bat-like creature and grabs her with his claw and flies out the door. Victor takes off after him. Vince runs towards the door.
"WENDY!"
He looks up to see the large creature carrying off his girlfriend, followed by Victor. They quickly disappear into the night. After a few seconds, he can only hear Wendy screaming in the distance. He goes back in and rushes over to his mother.
"Mom are you okay?"
He helps her up and puts her in a chair, while Sal Jr. helps his dad up.
"Mom, what just happened here? Who was that guy?"
Marlene looks up at her son with a worried look on her face.
"He's your father."
