Vampires in Modern Culture

Vampires are in. This is a fact, whether you like these undead bloodsuckers or not.The craze first started when Anne Rice released Interview With The Vampire. This hit triggered balls and even the vampire dress. Nowadays we have so many vampires popping into the media whether it be Blade, Buffy, Underworld, or Edward Cullen. Right now everyone loves the vampires that sparkle.

Writing about vampires can be profitable right now since the craze is even higher than usual. When I look at bookshelves in Barnes and Noble I see many vampire novels. They're in the adult fiction section, bestsellers, young adult sections, and the comics. They are everywhere. I've even seen the little figurines of Edward Cullen. Hot Topic stock even went up earlier this year because they were selling the Twilight products. They were the only place to be doing that until other businesses saw what was happening and got into the business of selling it too.

But what people are afraid of is their kids becoming obsessed with these fictional creatures of the night. Reading a vampire novel or seeing a movie about vampires is one thing but going around biting people and asking Robert Pattinson to make you a vampire is a completely different story. Back when Anne Rice vampires were in, people actually believed that Lestat, Louis and all of the other vampires were real and living in New Orleans. Sorry, no.

But do all people share in this love for vampires? No, not everyone. I think many people like the idea of vampires but at the moment it's the teenagers and mothers of those teens. Why did vampires suddenly become loved? Well, it started when Louis De Point Du Lac showed that he has a conscience and cares about humans. Since then vampires have lost the lifestyle of the traditional vampire. No longer do they sneak into bedrooms and night and feast on your blood. No longer do they hide out in graves and have inch long canine teeth. Now they're sexy and seductive, even god-like. People love these highly sexual beings.

But people have to know about how vampires have taken their toll on kids. I know of kids who have become fascinated with the Hollywood vampires and now want to join the vampire religion. There are kids out there that go around in their school biting people. This is not good. Parents have to take a firm stance on what their kids are allowed to see. These young minds are very impressionable and even though we all know that vampires are impossible, we see it so much that it becomes likely, and to some people, very possible.
