Vampires Suck: a Movie Review

Vampires Suck Reminds Us to Stop Taking Fantasy so Seriously

Donald Pennington
Vampires Suck is a wonderful parody of the Twilight franchise. Admit it, if you owned a movie production company, wouldn't there be a temptation to spoof the vampire movies of late? Well, now you don't have to. It's been done with Vampires Suck. Written and directed by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer (no relation to Alka), this gut-buster was released in 2010.

From the opening credits on, it's obvious the creators intent is to spoof not only all of the recent vampire hysteria in Hollywood, but also the fans of the Twilight franchise, Jersey Shore, The Kardashians, Canadians, the handicapped, homosexuality, the music industry, Hollywood in general, overwrought unrequited teenage love - oh heck - nothing is sacred. If seeing the world's most popular (and sparkly) vampire from the Twilight franchise getting spoofed bothers you, please go get a life.

Who stars in Vampires Suck? Starring in this treat are Jenn Proske as Becca Crane, Matt Lanter as Edward Sullen, Diedrich Bader as Frank Crane, Chris Riggi as Jacob White (as Christopher N. Riggi - I told you they're crazy), Ken Jeong as Daro, Anneliese van der Pol as Jennifer, and the brilliant David DeLuise as Old Man Scully. As with any great movie, there are too many talented names to list here without hurting a reader's eyes. Viewers who need more names can get the full cast and crew listing at IMDb.com.

What's my take on Vampires Suck? The language is raunchy, the humor gets ridiculously silly and crude, there are way too many sexual overtones, and boatloads of girl-on-girl violence. Vampires Suck is by no means for the children and certainly deserves an R rating (although it only received a PG-13). In short, I love it. The only time I stopped laughing was to catch a breath. Would I recommend Vampires Suck to my friends? You bet I would, especially if you're one of us that are tired of the Twilight franchise. No disrespect for Stephenie Meyer herself, but really, vampires don't sparkle.

The previews of this movie looked great. I'll probably watch it at some point.

    Ditto what Mike said.

I probably wouldn't "get" most of this movie, as I know almost nothing about the Twilight series. If the humor can stand on it's own, I might like it.
