Vancouver 2010 Olympics: Women's Hockey - Canada Vs. Slovakia

The second women's hockey game of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics featured Canada and Slovakia. Less than two minutes into the first period the Canadians proved their dominance by scoring the first goal of the game. Canada got their second goal not longer after a little over three minutes into the period. The Canadians got their first power play about four minutes into the period. During the power play they were able to score their third goal, which was the second goal scored by Agosta.

The fourth Canadian goal of the first period came around eight minutes into the period while the teams were playing four on four. They got their fifth goal with about eight minutes left in the period. They continued to dominate and scored their sixth goal with a little less than five minutes left in the period. About a minute later they scored their seventh goal of the game. The first period ended with a power play for Slovakia and the Canadians winning seven to zero.

The Slovakia team kept the Canadians from scoring for the first few minutes of the second period. With a little over sixteen minutes left in the period the Canadians scored their eighth goal of the game. Their ninth goal came with about thirteen minutes left in the period during a power play. Team Canada put their score in the double digits with their tenth goal about halfway through the second half. With about eight minutes left and down a player they scored their eleventh goal. Still shorthanded they scored their twelfth goal less than a minute later. Canada scored their thirteenth goal with a little over three minutes left in the period. The second period ended with the Canadians up thirteen to zero.

The Canadians got their fourteenth goal of the game a little over four minutes into the third period. Less than thirty seconds later they scored their fifteenth goal. With thirteen minutes left in the game the Canadians tied the Olympic scoring record in Women's Hockey with their sixteenth goal. They broke the record with a little less than nine minutes left in the final period. It was Hefford's fourth goal, which is an Olympic record number of goals scored by one player in one women's hockey game. About a minute later Canada scored their eighteenth goal of the game.

Even though the Canadians totally dominated the game the Slovakia team's goalie made a lot of great saves. A very lopsided match up, but that tends to be how at least a few of the games go in the first round of play and considering the Canadian desire to win gold in hockey at home it will not be surprising if they continue to dominate their opponents throughout these Olympics.

You need to keep in mind your taking the Best ranked country in the A pool for world hockey and the Last place ranked team for the A pool. Slovakia is the same team that Stomped an 81-1 victory over a team in the qualification tourny and they finished 12th in the world for the B pool. So the fact this team got it together in such a short period of time and even qualified Is Huge. I think Tomcikova played amazing in net, the score could have been much much worse. As for poor sportsmanship I think Canada was Fine, this is just the problem with Round Robin Play. We gotta remember how young womans hockey is yet, the other teams will eventually catch up I mean look and the Sweden and Swiss these teams def have come so far in the last 3 years even.

I disagree on it being poor sportsmanship. There is no reason a team should start playing easy. That is disrespectful to the other team, who was giving it their all, especially their goalie that kept making great saves until the end even though so many did get by her. Many of the underdog teams are there to get experience and they are not going to get it if they are not facing teams that do their best. I do kind of agree not that interesting of a game with it being such a wide margin, but it happens in the Olympics for most team sports in the beginning rounds (i.e. Team USA mercy wins in softball).

Not much fun watching this game and really poor sportsmanship on the part of the Canadians. There is no good reason to spank a team that bad other than to be showoffs. Bad, bad press for the olympics.
