Vandals in America

Cathy Pelekakis
Memorial Day weekend has just past, and with the long weekend came the release of young hoodlums. I am being kind when I call them only hoodlums, there are many other words that I would like to use, however I am trying to hold my temper. My son's car was vandalized early Sunday morning. We were going to go out on Sunday afternoon to see a movie, and my son stood on the front porch. He just stopped frozen in his place, he was just standing there looking at his car. I asked him what the problem was, and he told me to go look at his car, pointing his hand at his once beautiful car. He has a 2007 Tiburon, beautiful red car, someone on early Sunday morning decided that they were bored and were going through the negihborhood with a B B Gun and a baseball bat hitting cars. There were five that I found on our street alone, other neighbors were staring at their cars in disbelief.

We counted how many times that these hoodlums, rejects or sorry excuses for human beings shot his car, thirty six holes in the car, Thirty six not counting the busted out taillight and the damage to the roof of the car. Everything is closed on Sunday, its a holiday and here is all this damage. My neighbor 's car had similar damage, except his did not have a windshield anymore. When I called the Police department they told me that it would be around an hour before anyone could come out, they told me that there was at least twenty calls throughout the entire neighborhood with damaged vehicles. We drove the car over to the police station and made a report right on the police parking lot.

I called the insurance company and made my claim. This morning we took the car this morning to the shop and got a rental. I received a call from the insurance company this afternoon, the damage done to his car was $3500.00. If his car cost $3500.00 to be repaired, and there was at least twenty cars that were damaged, these hoodlums costs in one night's worth of mischief cost the insurance companies over $70,000.00.

My question is where are their parents? What ethics are being taught to these people? Do they not understand that the vandalism that they create not only raises the rates of the area, but also the rates that their parents have to pay? Where is the responsibility? Why are these kids being allowed to roam the streets at 2:00 a.m or later? I just do not understand, I really do not.

One neighbor across the lane told us that he has his security camera on and that he was taking the video to the police department. I hope that somehow these hoods are identified and punished to the fullest extent that the law will allow. I honestly believe that if the damage was done, as all of us expect, by underage kids, not adults, that their parents should be forced to pay for the damage that their child has done. These kids should be punished and forced to repay the neighborhood for the damage that they caused. This is just the begining of summer heaven help us with the remainder of the season.

this is so disgusting! People like this need to get a life. Tey are really sorry excuses for human beings. You'd think that they'd learn in childhood not to touch, or even destroy, anything that doesn't belong to them. That is one of the earliest lessons learned. I guess they missed that one.

So sorry this happened to your son. A couple years back , our conversion van stolen from right in front of house. I know that awful feeling of being violated.

Vandalism can happen anywhere. When my grandparents and uncle rented a Lincoln Town Car years ago, it was stripped right in front of their apt. in a safe neighborhood! What are peoples' motivations for doing such things?
