Vanessa Carlton's 'Rabbits on the Run' Shows Her Maturity

Jason Tanamor

The Vanessa Carlton I first heard in 2002 is a completely different one I'm hearing on her new album, "Rabbits on the Run." That's not entirely a bad thing as the debut of Carlton was a young, piano playing phenom who came onto the scene with musicians like Michelle Branch.

Back then, it seemed like a new breed of young and talented musicians was taking over the music scene. Carlton's debut album, "Be Not Nobody," spawned a hit single in "A Thousand Miles," and ultimately went on to sell two million copies worldwide.

Then something happened. Pop music took a turn for something more dance related and Carlton and Branch were left as pop/rock divas flying under the radar. Carlton went on to release two more albums before "Rabbits on the Run," each having moderate success but nothing near the appeal as "Be Not Nobody."

The world appeared to have missed out on the chance of watching Carlton grow up musically. However, the singer/songwriter did make news when she came out as bi-sexual during a concert at Nashville Pride.

On July 26th, Carlton's "Rabbits on the Run" will be released. This is a much more adult album than when she first came out. And rightfully so. It's been a decade since we first saw Carlton and you can hear that in her latest effort.

The album reminds me a lot of Chantal Kreviazuk's "Under These Rocks and Stones," a well produced album that plays lyrically and musically similar to albums by Billy Joel or Elton John.

As good of pianist and singer Carlton is, "Rabbits on the Run" really showcases her songwriting ability. Top to bottom the album is a solid effort. Each song plays well but the main star is the writing.
