The Internet offers a wide variety of online continuing education for teachers including courses, certificate programs, and degrees. The list below demonstrates the extent of the variety to help you consider what is best for you.

1. The Heritage Institute

Overview: Since 1975, the Heritage Institute has offered a unique approach to teaching based upon nature. Credits awarded for courses taken through The Heritage Institute are Antioch University quarter credits.

Type: Online continuing education courses for K-12 teachers that may be used for professional development, salary enhancement, or to maintain your teaching certificate.

Duration: One year to complete. Most courses can be finished in 2-3 months or less.

Cost: $115 (1 credit) to $415 (5 credits)

2, University of Southern Mississippi - VESi

Overview: The University of Southern Mississippi has partnered with Virtual Education Software, inc.(VESi) to offer continuing education courses for educators that provide interactive instruction on strategies for teaching students with special behavioral and learning needs.

Type: Online or via CD-Rom

Duration: Minimum 2 weeks - Maximum 1 Year (At Your Pace)

Cost: $164- $190 per course

3. TeacherOnlineEducation.com

Overview: TeacherOnlineEducation.com (T.O.E.) has over 25 years experience developing graduate courses for teachers. They offer instructor-facilitated online courses built by educators for educators and partner with colleges offering NCATE accreditation.

Type: Online continuing education courses for K-12 teachers

Duration: 12 full weeks

Cost: $499 and up

4. Western Governors University (WGU) Teachers College

Overview: WGU was founded by the governors of 10 U.S. States and offers NCATE-accredited online teaching degree programs.

Type: Online Graduate Programs for Licensed Teachers

Duration: 2 to 2 ½ years

Cost: $2,890 for six month term

5, The University of North Dakota

Overview: The University of North Dakota offers online college, K-12 educators, and career and personal development courses, certificates, and degrees for teachers. The University began offering correspondence by mail courses in 1910.

Type: Brick and mortar research university and primary center for professional education and training offering online education.

Duration: Term-based courses: 4-8 weeks Anytime courses: Up to nine months to complete

Cost: College courses are 235.50 per credit and not eligible for financial aid. Non-college courses are $89.00. Certificate and degree prices vary upon subject.
