Various Latex-Related Allergies

Dealing with Your Condition

Gregory Johansson
The sap extracted from the rubber tree is used in making latex, which is used in the manufacture of different products, including condoms and gloves. There are different types of allergies that are associated with latex, which may make using these products harmful if you are susceptible to them. It is therefore important to know these allergies so that you can take appropriate care to avoid serious health complications.

Since latex is used in making some diaphragms and condoms, taking appropriate care involves discussing with your partner to avoid possible use of the products, which can turn your love life into a nightmare.

This is particularly the case when you consider that latex often results in allergies that produce immediate reactions and symptoms. It is the skin that is usually affected, and it can result in such complications as itching, scaling, dryness, and redness. In many cases, latex allergy first manifests itself in the form of oozing lesions.

In case the symptoms do not develop into anything more serious, treatment can often be accomplished by creams and some allergy medication. The symptoms usually subside after some hours although they may stay for several days in some instances.

Latex may also result in more severe allergic reactions such as fever, severe itching, cramps, and hives. Such symptoms require immediate medical checkup, as delay may lead to even more serious complications, including breathing difficulty, increase rate of heartbeat, anaphylactic shock, and low blood pressure.

If you are already aware that you suffer from latex allergies, let all the people close to you know of this. They should as well know the steps they need to take in case you are attacked. This includes your doctor, as some medical instruments are made of latex. Since you will not always be close to those who know your condition, wearing a medical bracelet explaining your condition is recommended. To avoid anaphylactic shock, you may need to have an epinephrine syringe handy just in case you are exposed to latex.

The best measure you should take is to prevent exposing yourself to latex, as there is really no treatment for the related allergies. Get rid of anything that contains latex, from shoes to floors. Wear socks before putting on shoes. Let someone accompany you where you are going, as the world is full of latex.

Minimize chances of getting in contact with latex, as the allergic reactions worsen with repeated exposure.
