Various Methods of Online Advertising From Generic to Pay-Per-Click

What to Do when Marketing a New or an Existing Business Online

There are new businesses started on the Internet on a daily basis. These businesses could be standalone business on the Internet or are startups to promote an already established brick-and-mortar business. Even if the latter has more advantage, simply because all it might require is to reach more customers, both have to follow a certain procedure that had been endemic to doing business on the Internet in order to show a success rate.

Any business started on the Internet needs to be advertised aggressively and there is some cost involved, even if lowering that cost is possible, but that can only be accomplished by doing a lot of footwork, which had been proven to be time consuming. At times it is necessary to mix the various methods of advertising that vary from costly advertising methods to those methods that are free but labor intensive. It is difficult to measure which one is very effective except saying that when they are used together the outcome is always much better than sticking to one particular method of advertising only.

The best known and the shortest method of contacting buyers on the Internet is the renowned "pay-per-click" advertising where there is a given amount of cost earmarked to it. New advertisers have to be careful when they select their keywords, because that is how the ad works, for those who are new to it. Many advertisers had been at it for a long time now and all the effective keywords are already in use. There is a bidding war involved in PPC advertising and those who can afford to pay the highest bid are those who can get the best ranks on the search results.

The rest will fall behind and unless they are lucky or have some niche for the most part they can't do effective business, and most of the time because of the nature of the advertising method, if people get what they want, they might not want to shop around, which means some good niches will not be found. One way out of the bidding war is to choose keywords using phrases as the best keywords are being used by many sellers they become expensive because of the bidding involved, since it is those who pay the highest bid for those keywords that will get good ranking. That is why using phrase keywords is recommended especially for newcomers, because there is a better chance of being found through those phrase keywords assuming that searchers might use them. Because of the above uncertainty, it is important to use more methods of advertising, because if one of them does not show result the others might come to the rescue.

The second most popular method of advertising is "generic advertisement" and it is made up of a handful of nuts and bolts. In most cases, it requires to pay experts known as search engine optimizers or SEOs. In a nutshell, what they do is prepare a Web site to be search engine friendly. What that means is when the various search engines send out their robots to index sites that are uploaded to the Internet, there are a number of things they look for. If those requirements are in place the chance of the site being indexed to be found for the keywords that it chose to use could be high and at times it could beat paid advertising, or in most cases it could work as a supplement. The problem with this method is it takes a long time for the site to be indexed, and it might also need some up-keeping and monitoring of the rank of the site, because the search engines change the requirement what is known as algorithm frequently.

One key requirement that is part of Web site optimizing is known an "incoming links", where sites that are doing, more or less, similar things are pointing at each other creating what is known as "reciprocal link". This by itself is a long process where there are a few exceptions attached to it, and doing it quickly is not the way to go, it needs doing it through a gradual process. And if the sites selected are among those that get a higher point in the case of Google, or a site that has a big number of incoming links, it adds to the rank the site gets on the search results. There are methods of measuring quickly if a site has enough reciprocal links pointing at it and the robots can find out that easily, as well as there are simple methods for webmasters to check that. One method is to go to www.linkpopularity.com or to make a search using the term link popularity, or typing link: and the URL of any site on any search engine box can bring out that result.

Another known way of getting a good position in search results is to have "relevant conten"t on a Web site and this content has to be fresh, otherwise the robots will think the site is abondoned and they will not give it a good rank. The webmasters can write the content or there are sites that provide a huge amount of quality content. However, using such contents has a risk of having the site penalized because the robots could find out if there is content duplication that could definitely affect the rank of a site.

Simply applying these methods will make a site available in the search results for the keywords it provided, because it will always be current in the log of the robots. It will also meet the requirements that various search engines are looking for to index sites that give good value for the visitors. What is good about it is the webmasters could do the job and it could save a lot of expense while at the same time it serves the purpose of putting the site in front of prospects. Yet, using it with paid advertising is much more effective.

Using "a banner, popup, flash, animation, or even text ads" is also indispensable to be successful with a marketing campaign, yet almost all of them are earmarked with some kind of advertising cost, which could go up and down depending on the impression that advertiser are willing to pay for. Depending on the budget of the business, or on what they do, and the number of competitors they have, this method might be a must have. There is no recurring expense with it when it is clicked like PPC ads, except that a site through which a finalized sale came through will get what is agreed upon, mostly a small percentage of the total sale.

Email marketing if carried out in a big scale, it certainly beats anyone of the other advertising methods, because the exposure could be huge. To launch an email marketing the shortcut is to purchase email list, which is not cheap, or it is possible to build an opt-in mailing list, which is safer than buying an email list that is harvested from the Internet using various methods. Using an email list as a marketing tool could also be labeled as spamming, but always including the discontinue clause with the sent out email will make it a safe cold-calling and if the recipients do not want to receive the ad, it should be discontinued.

There are a few new arrivals on the scene of Internet marketing and one of them is "blogging" for a company or a business where posting a material on a regular basis on what the business is doing is required. If it catches up, it is one of the best methods to expose what a company is doing on a regular basis and it has a feedback and an ongoing interaction with a customer base or would be prospects. One other good thing about it is it could be free unless it requires hiring someone to interact with the bloggers.

Another new arrival is "podcasting", which has become more effective because of the explosion of mobile handheld devices and cell phones that have access to the Internet. Very short and effective ads could be put in podcasting, whether it is in a vedo or audio format where anyone can download it on the go, or while browsing the Internet, and it is proving to be a very effective method of attracting prospects.

Writing "articles" and submitting them to ezines is also another way of reaching a big number of audience and will have to be done in a regular basis and if it is done by a webmaster it is free. Most ezines have a wide range of networks where they can distribute these articles, which means it is an easy way of finding a spot on a good number of Web sites that have a considerable amount of visitors. From there on it is easy to attract prospects to a site using effective copy in addition to the articles, because the ezines provide a box at the end of every article to do a brief advertising.

Newsletters are even a much better way of reaching out prospects, as well as keeping a constant touch with them, because it is the best means of building an opt-in list that want to receive the newsletter on regular basis. Such captive audience is as good as prospects, because it could easily be enticed to a Web site to do business.

One key method that should not be forgotten is "site submission" because Web sites will have to be submitted to all the available search engines and indexes to increase the chance of their being found. It has to take place within a given interval to show for the search engines that the Web site is still active as most search engines could cancel a site after a month.

  • An online business like an offline bsuiness requires agressive advertising campaing and follow up
  • Even if those with low budget can do some business on the Internet the ad campaign is expensive
  • There is a high dependency rate on search engines to do business on the Internet.
If doing an effective business is the goal, mixing both paid and free advertising campaign makes economical sense and the outcome is a favorable ROI
