Vasectomy: My Experience

Chris G.
This may be too much information, but recently I had a Vasectomy. I didn't really know what to expect, so I read the little pamphlet they sent home with me after the consultation and listened to all my buddies tell me horror stories about their experiences.

When it was all said and done, it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Here's the process I went through.

Initial Consultation

I went to a Urologist for my Vasectomy. He sat me down and was very adamant making sure my wife and I were definitely done making babies.

My wife wasn't with me, so he told me he couldn't do the procedure until he got the word from her as well. He explained that some men got Vasectomies on the sly. The doc wanted to make sure he wasn't getting into the middle of some nasty domestic war.

After briefly explaining the procedure he did a quick inspection of my testicles. This was a little awkward, I wasn't expecting to have to drop my shorts and let him fondle my junk. It's a good idea not to wear strange or embarrassing underwear when you have your consultation.

He wrote me a prescription for 10mg of Valium and sent me out to his receptionist to set up a date.

I set up the procedure for a Friday. My thinking was I'd have the whole weekend to recover and could return to work on Monday. In retrospect it would have been better if I'd scheduled it on a Thursday. That one extra day would've been better.

Procedure

My Vasectomy was scheduled for noon. I had cut the hair off my scrotum the night before as instructed.

I went to work in the morning and took my Valium at 11. I work in the same building as the Urologist, so I didn't have to drive anywhere. The Valium affected me quickly, so it would not have been a good idea to get behind the wheel.

My wife met me and we went to the office. Since it's a Urology office, the clientele was mostly old men. It was pretty obvious that we were there for a Vasectomy since we were the youngest by 30 years. I got a lot of sympathetic glances.

The Valium had affected me by the time we were directed to a room; it made me feel really tired.

The nurse had me take my clothes off and wrap a sheet around my waist. I laid on a hard exam table. The doc came in and had us sign a document attesting that we actually wanted the procedure done.

Then the nurse whipped the sheet off and immersed my privates in incredibly cold iodine. It was shockingly cold and I'm sure my balls shrunk up to pea sized. I thought they wanted low hangers for this procedure. Holy crap, that was almost the worst part of the whole thing...almost.

The doc then explained that he was starting. He told me to expect a bee sting as he injected my Vas Deferens with Novocaine. He was right, it felt like a bee sting as the needle sunk in. After numbing me up he said I was going to feel some dull pressure, but if I felt anything sharp, I should tell him.

I guess this is when he started cutting and digging, I said "sharp" a lot, and he ended up having to inject me with a lot more Novocaine.

It was uncomfortable, but not excruciating. I was just starting to feel good about things when he told me the worst part was coming...great. There was an electric sound and I felt a deep pressure in my groin. This was uncomfortable for an instant. He had just cauterized the right side.

The left side was much more pleasant. I hardly felt a thing. When it came time for the cauterization though, it was nasty but thankfully short.

Then he was done.

Post Procedure

He packed the wound with gauze and had me pull up my tighty whiteys to keep the gauze firmly in place. He explained that I shouldn't shower for 24 hours and I definitely shouldn't have sex for at least 2 weeks.

He didn't prescribe any pain meds but said he would if I needed them. My wife drove me home and I waddled to the couch, put an ice pack of frozen peas on the area and slept for 6 hours. My wife came in every 20 minutes and took the ice on and off.

I didn't do anything that weekend, and went to work on Monday. I was fairly useless I probably should have taken the day off.

I finally started to feel better around Wednesday, 5 days after the procedure. Up until that point I always felt a dull ache in my balls and into my lower gut. It was uncomfortable and annoying but not too terribly bad. It was frustrating not being able to work out or anything.

It's been 9 days since the procedure and I'm back to wearing boxers and feeling pretty good. I'm going to give it another couple of days, but overall it was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be.

The vasectomy only took 20 minutes and was done in the comfort of the doctors' office.
