Seeing how his insurance had already paid for the original vasectomy, they were not going to pay to have the vasectomy reversal. They had to come up with the $7500 out of pocket, to pay for the procedure. After saving for a year they finally had the money for the surgery.
The reversal vasectomy was more difficult than getting the original vasectomy. The tiny tubes need to be reconnected through microsurgery. This procedure is normally performed on an out patient bases. The doctor normally takes a test prior to the surgery to make sure healthy sperm is present. My daughter also had to be tested to make sure she was able to get pregnant. Plus there were no guarantee that it would actually work.
My son-in-law had the surgery late on a Thursday and took three days to recuperate. Upon arrival at home he had to keep an icepack on his genitals to keep the swelling to a minimal.
On Monday he was able to return to work. My son-in-law has a desk job so he did not have to take a week off. Men with more physical jobs normally take a week before they are able to return to work. He could not do any extreme sports or exercises for three weeks following the surgery and had to refrain from sexual intercourse or ejaculation for four weeks.
My daughter and her husband were told that it would probably take at least a year to be able to have a baby. They were also concerned about my son-in-laws age for he was now 40 years old and wasn't sure his sperm count would be high enough to be fertile.
After a few weeks he went back to his doctor and had his sperm count tested. His sperm tested to a healthy sperm level. Surgery was successful.
It took almost a year before my daughter and her husband finally became pregnant. On September 14, 2007 they were blessed with a beautiful and healthy baby boy.
If you are considering having a vasectomy reversal check around to make sure that you are getting a qualified surgical doctor and ask how many successful vasectomy reversals he or she has done. This is a delicate microsurgery that not all surgeons are qualified to do.
Was the vasectomy reversal worth it? All I need to do is look at my new grandson and say a resounding YES.
