Steaks, hotdogs, hamburgers, chicken and polish sausage all comes vegan style! If you can't chow down on red meat, poultry, fish or dairy, you may have thought there was little reason for you to accept the invitation to that barbecue.
It can get tricky. Well-meaning hosts will try vigorously to push non-vegan food at you.
Well, go to that barbecue. But first, stop by the health food store, Whole Foods, Wild Oats, or major chain supermarkets and fill a small cooler with your choice of the following items:
In the Frozen Foods section:
- Gardenburger BBQ Riblets (ribs)
- Boca Original Meatless Burgers (hamburger)
- Gardenburger Flame Grilled Burgers (hamburger)
- Gardenburger California Burgers (hamburger)
- Food for Life Cluckphrey Vegan Patties (chicken burgers)
- MorningStar Farms Grillers Chik'n Veggie Patties (chicken burgers)
- Gardenburger Gourmet Baja Garden Steaks (steak burgers)
- Gardenburger Gourmet Fire Dragon Steaks (steak burgers)
- Gardenburger Gourmet Hula Garden Steaks (steak burgers)
- Gardenburger Gourmet Tuscany Garden Steaks (steak burgers)
In the Fresh Fruits & Vegetables section
- Lightlife Smart Dogs (hotdogs)
- Tofurky Gourmet Italian Sausages (polish sausage)
- Yves Deli Ham (ham slices)
- Hickory Smoked Tofurky Deli Slices (baloney)
- Lightlife Smart Deli Bologna Style (baloney)
- Galaxy Nutritional Foods Soy Vegan Slices (cheese)
On the Condiments Shelf:
- Naysoya Nayonnaise (mayonnaise)
In the Refrigerated Yogurt Section:
- Earth Balance Whipped Organic Buttery Spread (margarine)
It's not raw meat, so it doesn't take that long to barbecue. Meat eaters (prepared to screw up their faces in horror) will ask for a taste test, so be sure you bring more than enough.
Sometimes your grocer is not sure where to stock it. If you don't see it, ask for it.
Whole Foods also has vegan potato salad, vegan chicken salad and a variety of gourmet garden salads ready for takeout.
