One of the most needed vitamins for the human body is vitamin C. Vitamin C helps extremely with keeping humans healthy, strong and can even help with looking younger. However, consuming to much vitamin C can be very harmful to the body. The recommended daily intake of vitamin C is 90 milligrams, however it is considered to be safe to consume up to 2000 milligrams (2 grams) of vitamin C per day.
There are many various vegetables that have a very high amount of vitamin C in them and of course the most famous and popular of them is the red pepper. Red peppers are known in the USA and Canada as "bell peppers". While in other countries they might be called "chili peppers", "paprika", "capsicum" or "sweet peppers". They can be found almost in any grocery store and do not really cost much more than any other vegetables that are high in vitamin C. Red peppers are extremely high in vitamin C and have a lot more vitamin C than almost any other vegetable or even fruit. Red pepper has about 190 mg of Vitamin C per 100 grams. For example, an orange has about 50 mg of Vitamin C per 100 grams. So as you can see red pepper has almost four times more vitamin C than an orange has. However, red pepper is not only fantastic nutrition wise but also tastes greatly and can be easily added to any vegetable salad or any sandwich.
There are also two more vegetables that contain almost as much vitamin C as red pepper. Vegetables like parsley and broccoli both have a high amount of vitamin C in them. Parsley has about 130 mg of Vitamin C per 100 grams. While broccoli has about 90 mg of Vitamin C per 100 grams. As you can see parsley and broccoli are high in vitamin C, however they are still significantly behind red pepper, which has about 190 mg of Vitamin C per 100 grams. Nevertheless parsley and broccoli are two great alternatives to the red peeper when it comes to food with a high content of vitamin C. Parsley and broccoli can be found in almost any grocery store and do not really cost much more than red pepper or any other vegetable that is high in vitamin C. Parsley and broccoli are also very good sources of many vitamins, minerals and fiber. They can be easily added to any vegetable salad or any sandwich to make the food taste better.
There are also some vegetables that have less amount of vitamin C than red pepper, parsley or broccoli have. However, those vegetables are still considered to be great sources of vitamin C and can be good alternatives to the red pepper, parsley or broccoli. For example, vegetables like garlic, spinach, green cabbage and potato. Garlic, spinach and green cabbage all have about 30 mg of Vitamin C per 100 grams. While potato has about 20 mg of Vitamin C per 100 grams. Garlic, spinach, green cabbage and potato are still high in vitamin C. However, compared to red pepper, parsley or broccoli they contain a lot less vitamin C. Especially when they are compared to a vegetable like red pepper, which contains more vitamin C than garlic, spinach, green cabbage and potato combined all together. Garlic, spinach, green cabbage and potato are very popular vegetables and can be purchased at a low price in many grocery stores. Potato is probably the most popular and the most consumed vegetable of all vegetable mentioned above. Mashed potatoes, baked potatoes and french fries are very popular potato based side dishes. However, garlic, spinach and green cabbage also taste greatly and can be easily added to any vegetable salad or any sandwich to make the food taste better.
All vegetables mentioned above are great sources of vitamin C. Most of those vegetables also contain many other important vitamins vital to the human body. Vegetables listed above are a lot healthier sources of vitamin C than multivitamin pills or any other artificial vitamin C pills. Red pepper, broccoli, green cabbage and potato taste really good and can be great and healthy vegetarian alternatives to fatty snacks like hot dogs, corn dogs and hamburgers. For example, making vegetable salad with some of those vegetables can provide a required daily dose of vitamin C. However, vegetable salad can also be a very healthy snack with no fat, cholesterol or sodium and with many various vitamins, minerals and fiber. After all no other snack can be so tasty and healthy at the same time.
