Vendor's Guide to Displaying Wares at Craft Shows and Fairs

Taking the time to set up your vending table as described below can take your sales to the next level. By following these simple tips, your table can be the brightest star in a constellation of handcrafted goods!

Choose A Neutral Backdrop

It may be tempting to drape the table in glitzy fabric or in bright, festive patterns, but busy backgrounds can steal the focus from your stock. Save that white tablecloth for the dinner table, unless you specialize only in dark objects. A white background may look clean and fresh, but it makes light colored and clear items nearly invisible. Using a soft, solid color will give a professional, polished look that won't overwhelm your crafts. If you have more than one table, using the same backdrop will help to tie the craft displays together.

Varied Heights Engage the Eye

Instead of arranging everything flat on the surface of your table, make your vending area more interesting by varying the height of the table layout. Before your cover the table, simply stack small boxes or books. For more stability, use double sided tape to secure the base, then drape the table. You can also purchase tabletop display stands to help make the most of your allotted space. These are two inexpensive ways to feature smaller items or one of a kind crafts that might otherwise be overlooked.

Use Lighting To Highlight

Even if the venue provides basic lighting, consider adding more punch to your craft fair offerings by using custom lighting. Check with the person in charge for any special rules regarding extension cords and electric outlet availability. You can use a simple desk lamp to bring out the sparkle of shiny jewelry, glass, or beaded items. Use flooring appropriate tape to secure the cords and prevent tripping accidents. If no power outlets are available, consider using battery operated accent lights.

Keep It Simple

An intricate sunburst pattern may be impressive, but it's not necessarily a good thing for this venue. While many people will stop to compliment such an arrangement, they will not be as likely to handle the merchandise for fear of destroying your complex display. Shopping is an interactive experience, so customers should feel free to touch items, bond with them, and buy them!

Think Cornucopia

People go to craft fairs to find treasures among the handcrafted gifts. If there are only a few pieces on the table, your stall will give the impression of having been picked clean. Create an aura of abundance by using all the free space available. If you have items that drape, let these overhang the edges of the table by an inch or two. As items are purchased, replenish your stock as soon as possible.

Sold out? No Problem!

When you begin to run low on merchandise, fill in the empty space with flyers, business cards, or other promotional materials. These can be fanned out to create an attractive focal point, and they will take up more room this way. You can also use craft supplies to fill empty space and add a splash of color to your table. This is a good way to attract fellow crafters to your space, and the raw supplies may sell just as well as the finished crafts.

These ideas should allow you to relax a little bit, have fun, and make money!
