Venus Williams - a Contender for the U. S. Open Championship Trophy - 2010

Top-ranked Serena Williams Will Not Compete Because of a Foot Injury

Mary Carol Herwood
Venus Williams' younger sister Serena, the top-ranked women's tennis player, is unable to compete in this year's U. S. Open tournament because of a foot injury suffered shortly after her win at Wimbledon in July. Venus, ranked #4, therefore becomes a serious contender for the championship this year.

She does have some competition however. With Kim Clijsters back in the hunt and Maria Sharapova healthy once again, Venus will have to be at the top of her game. Caroline Wozniacki who is seeded #1 at the U.S. Open is another threat to Venus in this tournament. Wozniacki won her third consecutive title at the Pilot Pen competition in New Haven last week leading up to the U. S. Open at Flushing Meadows.

Venus won her first round at the Open over Roberta Vinci from Italy with straight wins of 6-4, 6-1 which bodes well for her future match-ups. Venus is currently ranked #4 behind her sister Serena, Caroline Wozniacki, and Kim Clijsters.

The Williams Sisters are the reigning champions in women's doubles at the Australian Open, the French Open and the U.S. Open. They were hoping to make the Grand Slam in women's doubles at Wimbledon in July but lost in the quarterfinals to a Russian pair. To date, the Sisters have won 18 doubles titles. Venus has won 43 singles titles. Venus has also won more Olympic gold medals than any other female tennis player, having won one gold medal in women's singles and two in women's doubles.

Venus launched her EleVen Clothing Line in 2007. The collection covers a wide spectrum, from performance apparel to lounge wear, accessories and footwear. She has often caused a sensation at tennis tournaments when she sports outfits from her collection. Venus has a degree in Fashion Design from the Art Institute in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

Venus and her sister Serena have much to be proud of, and we congratulate both girls on their achievements. We also wish Venus good luck in her try for the championship at the U.S. Open 2010.
