Veranda Bistro: A Can't-Miss Meal in the Roanoke, Virginia Area

Ruth Carter
Roanoke is a growing area in the southwestern part of the state of Virginia. It began as a railroad boom and continues to gain new residents every year. If you ever move to Roanoke or are just passing through this location, you have to stop and eat at the restaurant known as Veranda Bistro.

Veranda Bistro is located at 8201 Williamson Road and is approximately a mile from the entrance to Hollins University. If you are heading north on Interstate 81, you would take exit 146 which is the Hollins University exit. You would then be on Plantation Road and would drive down to the intersection of Plantation Road and Williamson Road, and take a left at the stoplight onto Williamson Road. You would follow Williamson Road down past Hollins University (which would be on your left), and then, about a mile down the road, you would see a sign for Veranda Bistro along with one for Creekside Market. You would pull into the parking lot of the mini-strip mall, and Veranda Bistro is on the far left of the building. You will see a large sign over the door. If you get lost, you can always call the staff at Veranda at 540-563-4445, and they will be happy to direct you to their establishment.

Veranda Bistro specializes in Greek and Italian delicacies, but they also provide other delicious options as well. My personal favorites are the Greek Island Combo which includes homemade hummus, feta cheese, dolmades, yellow banana peppers, and homemade pita bread, the Soccer Mom calzone which is made from homemade bread, stuffed with romano and mozzarella cheeses, spinach, and sundried tomatoes, and served with a homemade tomato sauce, Veranda's cheese pizza which is handmade and baked in a brick oven, and the homemade baklava. Every piece of these yummy foods tastes as if it were made with love and care.

Veranda Bistro also offers little chef birthday parties in which the birthday child is able to dress in a chef's outfit, and he or she and their closest friends get to design and make their own pizza under the supervision of one of the delightful owners, Irene Karageorge. My son has had several of these birthday parties, and he, his siblings, and his friends have all had a wonderful time.

In addition to the delicious food and the amazing birthday parties, Veranda Bistro offers an extremely friendly staff and warm, cheery atmosphere. You are treated as a member of the family rather than just as a customer who is requesting a meal. The bistro's décor is very tasteful and cozy, and you can even choose to dine out on the porch area where you can get a lovely view of the nearby creek.

Veranda Bistro is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 11am-9pm, Friday from 11am-10pm, and Saturday from 4pm-10pm. The bistro is closed on Sunday and Monday.

Whether you are visiting the Roanoke area or making it your new home, be sure to check out Veranda Bistro. You will be glad that you did.
