Verizon: A Wireless Review

Can You Hear Me Now?

Andrew Berry
Verizon Communications, better known as Verizon, is a company that provides broadband, telephone communications, television services, and other operations. Verizon is a company formulated in 2000 through the buying and merging of a handful of companies over a duration of time. These companies include NYNEX, Bell Atlantic, and GTE.

Although that is a small synopsis about Verizon Communications, this review is intentionally created to shine the light on my own view and experiences with Verizon, especially its wireless services.

Personally, I do own a Verizon Wireless LG Model cellular phone. Everywhere I have traveled, I usually have some sort of service. Obviously service, service being the reception you can transmit and recieve for telecommunication uses, is the most important aspect of a cellular phone. A cell phone, to my knowledge, is for wireless communication use between two distanced people. If you lack service, you cannot call or text message a person, nor recieve calls or text messages. If you have low service, you can sometimes do these tasks, but other times not.

Verizon Wireless' phones also contain many other features. Like I explained before, you have text messaging ability. Text messaging is when you type up messages in a notepad type of display on your cell phone using the numerical pad, and send it to another cell phone user. Text messaging does cost more however, but for teenagers it may be a good investment for when in school, and to communicate with other friends when in a position they cannot verbally communicate, for example, a library. Verizon Wireless also has a program that allows you to download games known as "Get It Now". This program allows you to download games, ringtones, Mobile IM (AOL Instant Messanger through your cell phone), travel guides, entertainment information, sports information, weather information, traffic information, and much, much more. There is a certain amount of capacity on the phone though, so choose applications with precision.

When I first got my phone though, I have to admit that the battery lifespan was indefinitly very limited, possibly to a few hours. After I got a new battery, a somewhat more bulky battery, the lifespan is a few days, after fully charged of course. Check your battery, and if the lifespan is short I recommend finding a better battery. With a feeble battery, using applications and playing games drained the battery dramatically.

Verizons' customer service is pretty good too. One time there was a mistake about my text messaging plan, and they overcharged my family an extra $140 for overuse of text messaging. After a mere phone call, and talking to a Verizon manager in that department, they dropped the $140 charge. Saving the $140 alone was a jaw dropping experience from a company, but having a company admit they made a mistake, and is morally comprehensible is what makes me love Verizon even further. Verizon has stores set up all over to help advertise their services, help with broken phones, help set up plans, and much more. My girlfriends phone broke one time, so we went to one of these stores a few miles away. After a decently long wait, they took in the phone, and replaced it for $50. This cost is somewhat expensive, and this is a sort of downfall. I don't think they actually fix the phone, yet just replace it. When she got the phone back, she lost all of her contacts, pictures, files, and more. The contacts were easily transferred, but the pictures and games were gone. The same thing happened to myself as well.

A great, yet controversial aspect of some Verizon Wireless phones is the use of a portable camera embedded within the phones exterior. The LG model can hold up to 60 pictures, which is a good amount. After taking a picture you can send it to other cell phones, or even an e-mail address. The camera is decently clear, and does contain a flash if activated. There are other features of the camera within the phone. Such features include color effects, different shutter sounds, file quality, multishot, brightness, self timer, and more.

Overall, Verizon is a well built company with high morals. During Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita, Verizon donated 10,000 Verizon phones with free air time, 20,000 pre-paid calling cards, and $10.8 million in employee donations.

This review mainly concentrates on Verizon's wireless aspects. Although I do love their wireless services, their other services are great as well. I have had Verizon DSL, a broadband service that enables high speed internet use. The Verizon DSL was pretty fast, and the server seemed to almost always be up, unless there was a natural reason it was down, such as electrical storms, and more.

Out of 10, I give Verizon's wireless aspect a 9.8. There is some room for improvement, even if it is small. I do heavily recommend using Verizon Wireless. With technology on the rise, Verizon is rising with it.

And like their new logo says,"We Never Stop Working For You", is very true.
