Verizon Wireless USB760 Modem

I use this device and it works great. It is basically a cell phone that tethers to your computer (laptop or desktop) via a USB connection and functions as a modem. It dials a special number to access the internet and the Verizon network. The device has no buttons, screen or any normal features of a cell phone. Its only purpose is to get you online. There is a phone number associated with the modem which not only allows it to call out but also receive SMS text messages. Verizon sends free messages relating to your account just like on a regular cell phone and plan. You will receive a charge for sending and receiving non Verizon texts if you do not have a texting plan.

I chose this device and service as a solution because I live in a rural area where DSL and Cable internet access are not available. I am taking online college courses and having a reliable and fast internet connection is a must. I get great signal strength with Verizon. The speed of the internet connection is comparable to 1.5mb DSL service. I usually get a throughput of 1mb.

The modem comes with some storage space so that it can be used as a USB flash drive. All of the software you need to get connected, like drivers and a connection manager are on the modem itself and installs automatically the first time you plug in the device. There is also a MicroSD slot for adding additional storage. This works great for me when I am on the go and have to take my online projects with me. I can just store them on the modem itself so I know I will have them with me wherever I go.

In the past I would have to drive to town and find a Wi-Fi hotspot to access the internet. Now I can access the internet from anywhere a Verizon phone can make a call. Other Carriers like ATT offer similar devices. It just turned out that in my area Verizon works better. From my experience, Verizon does have a larger coverage map. Unfortunately, one dead spot is at my in-law's house a few hours away but when we visit them we use their home Wi-Fi network.

One other small drawback is that I am limited to the amount of data I can send and receive in a certain time period. The limit is 5 gigabytes per month but I have yet to reach this amount so it is really not a big problem for me.

It is pretty neat to ride around town and surf the internet at the same time. This makes missing emails, online classes or Facebook posts a thing of the past
