Very Low Temperatures This Winter: Recycle Unused Items to Help Others

Julia Bodeeb
The temperature is very low in many parts of the country right now. As I write this article it is 8 degrees here. The low temperatures around the country place many people at risk. Thus, the deep winter months are a good time to donate unused items used to fight the cold to thrift shops. This is a green living strategy that can help save lives.

Donating items you do not use can help other people stay warm and safe. Many people who are struggling financially shop at the Salvation Army and Goodwill thrift shops. Donating winter items to these stores will help people in financial crisis find a way to buy the items they need to stay safe at affordable prices.

Where to Donate

To find Salvation Army thrift shops in your area go to their website HERE. Goodwill thrift shops also take donations of clothing. To learn more about how to donate to Goodwill go HERE.

Items to Donate in the Winter

Donate unused blankets to thrift shops. For people who are having problems paying heat bill this time of the year, a heavy blanket can make the nights cozy. With high unemployment levels, many people are struggling to pay the rent or mortgage. Thus they keep the heat set on low to save money. This results in a chilly home that makes it hard to sleep.

Be kind and donate old boots and coats that you no longer use. Many people have items in their closets that they haven't used in years. Take some time to go through the stuff you own and bring unused items to the Salvation Army or Goodwill.

Take the time to go through the car and closets and find all the winter gloves floating around. Match them up to make the complete set of gloves and then donate some of them. You probably have more gloves than you actually use. It would be a good deed to donate them to help someone stay warm in this cold winter.

If you have any wool hats, sweaters, scarves or socks you do not use donate them. Heavy clothing can be a lifesaver for people who live on the streets or cannot afford much heat at home.

Hold a Clothing Drive

You may also want to hold a clothing drive in your neighborhood. If you tell people that if they bring bags of clothing to your car on a Saturday morning you will drive the stuff to the thrift shop you may get a lot of donations. Many people have good intentions to donate items but never quite have time to get to the thrift shop. If you make the trip for them it will be a major donation and a big good deed.

Excellent article full of wonderful, very helpful ideas. It's extremely cold here in upstate NY, I'm inspired to look through the house for some items to donate.

Perfect! You didn't miss a thing on your list. Thanks for the mention of matching gloves! It's disheartening to be unable to help someone who needs them because you only have one. I've lived this time and again. Excellent article.
