VESID: Job and Training Help for the Disabled

Anne Therese McCorkell

Some people have told me that they sought help from psychiatrists and psychologists when they suffered injury in car accidents or suffered depression which interfered with their jobs, causing them to lose their job seemingly permanently. Many people have told me they were not told of any training or re-training programs for disabled people even though they expected all kinds of helpful information from their therapists. I want to tell you about training you can get access to yourself.

Be a doer. Seek training through a program called VESID. It isn't easy, and you will also be expected to be in physical therapy or whatever other medical or psychiatric treatment your doctors order for you. In other words, you are expected to be responsibly taking care of your needs and completing the work required in your training school because it is all getting paid by VESID. Most people have heard of Medicaid for medical coverage, but they didn't know that there is a State Agency listed under Education Department which is called VESID (Vocational & Educational Services for Individuals With Disabilities Office.) Look your nearest office up in your borough or city. They will tell you their hours, location, and what you need to bring with you.

First, you will need to get directions to get there, fill out an application, and be assigned a counselor. They will screen you to make sure you are truly on Disability. There is an ID check to get into the building. They will tell you when the next orientation is going to be. Be there because this training could change your life. All you need is determination to complete training or re-training to get on with your life. Afterwards you will go to a testing center to see if you are considered capable of doing the job, for example, medical technician, that you want to do. There will be written tests and possibly tests like manual dexterity tests. I have met people who went for massage therapy training, teaching and all types of clerical and computer training who went to VESID. Don't let this opportunity pass you by. You can get on with your life.
