Veteran's Memorial Elementary School Handing Out Condoms to Children

Children as Young as 5 Can Obtain Contraceptives

Stephanie Espiritu
"Veteran's Memorial Elementary School" in Provincetown, Massachusetts has made headlines about their distribution of condoms to school-aged children.

In the fall students can request contraceptives without having their parents notified and children as young as 5 years old are no exception.

Under the new policy at "Veteran's Memorial Elementary School," which has students from pre-Kindergarten to the sixth grade, condoms will be available for any student of any age that asks.

Further, parents of "Veteran's Memorial Elementary School" students will not be able to oppose this new policy and although their opinions and concerns are being heard it will not change what has already been implemented.

There is so much wrong here. How did the school system come to the conclusion that this would benefit the children? And why is it that they don't see how this will hurt children of this age? At any age.

"Veteran's Memorial Elementary School" and any other school system or district should never be allowed to set the standard of right and wrong when it comes to children. I believe that although the school district's intentions are good (most of the time) they've really crossed the line on this one. Handing out contraceptives to children sends the message that having premarital sex is ok as long as precautionary measures are taken. This is not nor will it ever be a good message to send to children of any age.

At a time teenage pregnancy was taboo and families that were affected sent their pregnant teen away until the child was born. But over the years, society, the school system, and parents have made changes to the way they feel concerning a child and teenage pregnancy. Teens are taught (and now younger children) that it's ok to have premarital sex as long as you love the person and society confirms this by handing out condoms.

Unless parents and the school system change their way of thinking and teach children what's right and what's wrong, the pregnancy rate as well as the sexually transmitted disease rate will continue to climb and more and more children will suffer.

Good for them. Only teaching abstinence has proven to be a total failure, so handing out condoms is a good thing.
