Years ago, if there was a problem with your pet you would take them to the doctor and If it was serious, most of the time they wouldn't be able to help the poor thing. Your choices were to let them go on for as long as they could survive or pay a fee to the doctor to have the pet put to sleep.
The technology and veterinary medicine has changed so much over the years. Experienced veterinary doctors can treat a dog or cat's illness now by going through surgeries and thousands of different prescription pills. Owners are more attached than ever and they want to protect and take care of their pets like they are one of their children. Some owners actually get along better with their pet than some of their family members.
Pets can have ACL surgery and even laser eye surgery now. The treatments are almost like treating a human's illness. There are antibiotics and even eyedrops available these days. Some pets take 8 prescription pills a day. They are on so much medication that they almost need their own nurse to make sure they take all their pills. I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't a bunch of nursing homes bulit for pets in the near future. I know a pet owner that took their dog to the doctor for a runny nose. They ended up getting antibiotics and a bill for $90.
More and more people think that it is worth it to spend thousands of dollars in a year and they will do anything possible to keep their pet alive so they can spend more time with them. Veterinary medicine is a billion dollar a year industry and it is common for some pet owners to spend $3,000 or more in a year on healthcare and necessities for their pets. Having a few seriously ill pets in a lifetime could equal the cost of a new vehicle or a college degree.
Veterinary medicine is becoming incredible regardless of the costs. I would say if your a caring pet owner and you can find affordable pet insurance for your pets that are over 5 years old, it could be worth it. Anyways, it's amazing what the doctors can do for your pets these days. If only they can be as caring as the pet owners and help keep the costs for treating all of the sick ones down. This would allow many more families to get the treatments they need for their pets and without even thinking about putting them to sleep.

Post a CommentMy dog has cost me thousands of dollars in 8 years for medical care and emergencies, whereas in the last 8 years I have spent about $200 on my own medical needs. My consensus? The damn dog is worth every penny, including the $300 I spent on her ear infection, the $800 for her bout with rat poison, the $200 to spay her, the $400 when she got scratched by a cat and her face got infected...the list goes on and on, my friend...my mutt is the most expensive dog ever- ha ha, but pet insurance never crossed my mind. I have a $600 savings for vet emergencies, just in case...knowing my dog, I'll likely use it, goofy mutt :)
That is a great article and really hits home for me. When we got our dog 7 yrs ago, we never thought about pet insurance, we just figured he would never need it. He is truly a part of our family. We take him just about everywhere we go. He is going blind now and is on medication. These medications are very expensive. maybe we should have considered the insurance when we got him, but if he never needed it we would have spent money for nothing.
