Veterinary Pet Insurance: Is it Worth Having?

Lisa Mommy
Today I took my dog to the veterinary office. He's the terrier on the right. He has a small growth on his neck. The doctor said it doesn't look cancerous but recommended taking it off to make sure. Since he would be put out for it I wanted to know what the price would be for a dental cleaning and nails trimmed. He had a dental cleaning about 2 years ago when he was put out for another skin growth he had removed. This is also the only way he can get his nails trimmed(he gives the pet groomers the worst time ever if they try). So the veterinary pet assistant comes in with an estimate of 500 and something dollars. Even without the dental it would still be almost $400. I couldn't believe it. I started thinking to myself, "I should have never canceled that veterinary pet insurance." A couple years ago the total for the same thing was a little less than $200 where we use to live. But I had vet pet insurance so most of it was covered.

Then I remembered the reason I do not have it anymore. The insurance co. said I would get reimbursed for certain things and I did not. The same thing happened to my mom with the same company. I tried to call and they would say well fax or send in the paperwork. Of course everything was done right but never received the full amount I was supposed to. That was veterinary pet insurance co.-DO Not use them! My mom was even looking into a lawsuit, because they would not reimburse her for costs that were suppose to be. And all paperwork was sent in correctly.

The amount you pay in insurance was about $50 a month; that would be $600 a year. Let's add the deductible you have to pay about $50 or more + the 20% of the total bill is your responsibility. They usually pay 80% some do pay 100%. Now If nothing happens to your animal for years than I think it would end up costing you more with VPI. Of course it probably would be worth it if there was always something wrong with your animal and you received every item listed that they cover. But then whose to say they are going to give you back what is supposed to be covered. I say along with a couple other people I know, IT'S Not worth it. It's better to just pay for what is wrong at that time. Believe me I love my dog I have had for 7 years. After all he is my first son.

What do you think? Does anyone have VPI or something like that? Tell me about your experience. I know some people think we pet lovers are even crazy for talking about the idea of this. But more and more pets are being welcomed into our homes.

I have nine pets, so there's no way pet insurance would be worth my while. I just grit my teeth and pay full price for veterinary care, even though it can be pretty darn expensive.

With multiple dogs $30-50/animal is out of the question for pet insurance, especially with still having to pay up front if something happens and not knowing if it will really be reimbursed. Even 2 animals - putting $100/month aside in a special savings account in a year that's $1,200 if it's untouched. With four animals it'd cover many surgeries. Preventative measures take care of many issues - I think it's better use of money to put it in savings rather than giving it to insurance. JMO on what I've seen in looking into it.
