VH-1, 'Tough Love' and its Reality TV Stars

On Sunday, March 16, "Tough Love", a new VH-1 show that featured young (and generally attractive) women who can't seem to find Mr. Right to save their lives made it into our TVs. Oh, woe is them and the funky attitudes (that seem magically to arrive within a millisecond of being given bad news) that we are treated to -- again. They didn't have to kiss an aging musician or participate in a grade-school contest to prove faithfulness. They got mad because the host gave them the three basic rules for getting into any stable relationship

* Don't put out the "goods" too quick
* Don't talk too much on the first date, and
* Be confident (even if you know you're not hot)

Yep, VH-1 has decided to stretch those three simple rules into a 2-month long reality series.

Here we go again.

I'm still wishing for the return of "Rock-n-Roll Jeopardy" (without Jeff Probst), "Behind the Music" or anything that actually relates to recording artists or just music period. Now, I won't lie, some of these reality stars have been more entertaining than any Julliard or "method" acting on some overworked sitcom. Many call it a guilty pleasure. And in these times, probably well-deserved yet it has gotten way out of hand as the spinoffs give birth to one and then another and another.

It has made celebrities out of those who come off as inarticulate, rude, extra-horny or just not on the same planet as the rest of us when it comes to everyday logic. A few have managed to go on to other minor projects outside of the reality genre with mixed results. Either way, the majority are still considered celebretards who must be stopped.

Though they make good fodder for shows like The Soup and Best Week Ever, I think the only way we are going to see really good programming is to learn videography and we create it ourselves.
