As I stroll the narrow, pebbled way
I see the large and rusty iron gate
Guarding the road to the display.
Pebbles scrunch under my feet
As mourning doves coo me in
The tall fir trees majestic stand
And I slowly enter in.
As I breathe the sweet scents in
My eyes twinkle with a new glow
And my recollections from the past
Meet imagination about a long time ago.
I see the coy young maiden
And the flirting Roman soldier too
As they wait on the ship to dock
And its goods to come to view.
Then time passes and in a wink
I see children playing hide and seek
And along what once was a Roman port
Now runs a very small creek.
The mourning doves call to me
It is time for the present to chime in
The tall fir trees majestic stand
Honoring the history within.
