I first saw Vibram Five Fingers shoes in an article in Sierra magazine. The article touted Five Fingers as the Next Big Thing in fashion for crunchy, outdoorsy types like me. At first, my reaction was skeptical. The shoes seemed more like a "Look at me!" fashion statement than anything utilitarian or practical. Without much thought, I dismissed the idea of buying a pair and decided to stick with my rope sandals in summer and Timberlands in winter.
On an impulse, I decided to try on a pair at Rock/Creek, a major retailer for outdoor exploration supplies. I had come to the store to look for solid hiking shoes, and was stunned when I found that the Vibram Five Fingers shoes could meet and exceed my needs better than traditional hiking-wear. I now own my own pair of Five Fingers shoes, and I must say that I'm pleased with my purchase. Here are a few points that influenced my satisfaction with Vibram Five Fingers.
Experience
The experience of wearing Vibram Five Fingers shoes can't be entirely described. It was, to me, entirely separate from a sensation of comfort. I'm able to feel the contour and texture of the earth under my feet, but with my soles fully protected. I'm addicted to the feeling of being barefoot, and Five Fingers shoes provided me with that part-of-this-world feeling-- without the fear of puncturing my feet on a vine or scalding them on hot pavement.
Comfort
Although I enjoyed the experience of wearing Vibram Five Fingers shoes right off the bat, they were somewhat uncomfortable for the first few days. My feet had to get used to the feeling of being shoed and barefoot at the same time, and my toes had to adjust to a healthier posture than that offered by conventional shoes. However, after four days, I was entirely accustomed to the shoes.
Cost
My shoes were on sale at Rock/Creek for 20% off, which put them at a reasonable $80 per pair. While not the cheapest shoes in the world. they were marginally less expensive than a pair of high-quality hiking boots. While I must admit that the shoes did take a decent chunk out of my wallet, I didn't find the price entirely unreasonable for the quality of product I received.
Appearance
I personally don't find the look of Vibram Five Fingers shoes particularly appealing, but I got many compliments on the shoes the first time I wore them. As time went on, the appearance of the pair sort of grew on me. They are striking but relatively subtle, with a look that is at once both classic and futuristic. If you're going for the low-profile look, I'd suggest aiming for a solid black pair of Five Fingers shoes. The teal seems to jump out just a little more than I would have wanted.
Durability
Five Fingers shoes look weak and flimsy, but they're tough as nails. I went hiking on relatively rugged terrain in my Five Fingers shoes, and they didn't experience any damage whatsoever. I got the shoes wet and muddy. I walked on rock, sand, pavement, soil and clay. They came out of the trip in almost mint condition. The shoes can also be machine-washed and hung to dry, without any problems.
Special Note
I have a very mild latex allergy, and usually only react to low-quality latex. I didn't anticipate that a shoe would cause me any irritation. However, my Vibram Fivefingers shoes did irritate my feet a bit when I wore them without socks. I was able to prevent the problem from recurring by wearing a pair of toe socks to protect my feet. If you are severely allergic to latex, I'd advise avoiding Fivefingers shoes entirely. If your reaction is mild, try wearing them with toe socks to prevent direct friction against your skin.
Overall, I am very satisfied with my choice to give in to the trend and buy a pair of Fivefingers shoes. I know that, as soon as this pair finally does give up the ghost, I'll be quick to buy another set. Vibram Fivefingers shoes have provided me all the best in comfort, function and tactile experience.
