Vic Chesnutt-Skitter on Take-Off Cd Review

Featuring 9 Acoustic-Guitar and Drum tracks, Skitter on Take-Off is proving to be a unique contrast from previous works by singer/songwriter Vic Chesnutt. Chesnutt used strong emotions and general feelings to dramatize the album, with hopes of differentiating himself from other artists, by continuing to cross boundaries. Released in 2009, this album displays raw material with fictional/social messages on a wide variety of topics on the album, including politics, society, and many others.

On the acoustic guitar-driven track Dick Cheney, Chesnutt conveys political messages about his thoughts on the former Vice-President singing "Confidence near from ear to ear/Maybe not the straightest aim/But that don't stop you from shooting over and over again." First inspired by the book Angler, Chesnutt was fascinated with Dick Cheney's "unconscionable" and "evil" ways, while still holding power over the country. Chesnutt used personal feelings as a way to convey messages to listeners, while continuing to cross boundaries with his dark and honest lyrics.

With Jonathan Richman on guitar and Tommy Larkins on drums, Chesnutt delivers strong emotional lyrics to the straight-forward ballad "Worst Friend". In the song, Chesnutt details the darkest lives of various individuals in society including the smoker, the "retard", and the cancer patient. Chesnutt's worldwide viewpoint might develop criticism from some, while others may appreciate the truth and honesty about America's darkest society.

Skitter on Take-Off is an album used to convey Chesnutt's personal thoughts about society and politics. With collaborations from Jonathan Richman and Tommy Larkins, this album brings a whole new approach to the recording and writing process for Vic Chesnutt. Skitter on Take-off brings a dramatically-approached idea into the forefront, while displaying social and fictional stories throughout each song.
