Vice President Biden Does Not Second-Guess China's One Child Policy
Shame on You, Vice President!
When answering questions posed by the audience after a speech at Sichuan University, Biden seemingly condoned China's one-child policy.
He said in regards to China's social safety-net, "You have no safety net. Your policy has been one which I fully understand--I'm not second-guessing--of one child per family. The result being that you're in a position where one wage earner will be taking care of four retired people. Not sustainable"
The middle of that quote is where I and many others have taken offense. He's not "second-guessing" a policy that has lead to abortion, forced sterilization, infanticide, jail, torture, and loss. He apparently "understands" a policy that undermines the dignity of women, the unborn, the newly born, and the handicapped all throughout China.
The one-child policy in China is just that; a policy that urban married couples are only allowed to have one child. This makes pregnancy outside of marriage illegal and results in the forced abortion of the child.
If a family is only allowed one child, they are forced to make sure that child is a healthy one. Any child that is discovered in the womb to be handicapped is aborted and any child that is found to be handicapped after birth is killed.
Many Chinese have historically believed it is better to have a boy than a girl because a boy can carry on the family name and better provide for their parents in their old age. As a result, it is the girls who are aborted or victims of infanticide. Luckily, many children are put up for adoption, but many more are still put to death.
This policy was created in 1978 out of concern for overpopulation draining China of its scarce resources. Due to many factors, including a concern about the increasing gender imbalance, this policy is being reviewed. It looks as if some people in China don't "understand" the one-child policy either. Since Biden "understands" it, I wish he would explain it to me.
