BADRAP and others fought to save them, and time has proven PETA and the rest of the euthanasia crowd wrong.
Today, the dogs rescued from Vick's infamous Bad Newz Kennels are living happy lives, and providing joy and comfort to the people who went out on a limb to save them.
America's Dogs, as I like to call them, have been distributed to permanent and foster homes across the nation. The December 29, 2008 issue of Sports Illustrated landed on news stands with a cover graced by Jasmine, one of the abused dogs that some so-called experts had claimed could not be redeemed. In a six page article, Jim Gorant writes about the dogs and the people who changed their lives.
Not long after the atrocities at Vick's dog fighting operation were exposed to the public, I found out that BADRAP (Bay Area Dog owners Responsible About Pitbulls) was one of the organizations involved in attempting to rescue these animals from other organizations that were calling for wholesale euthanasia of the entire lot.
The rescuers couldn't seek a lot of outside financial aid for the travel, veterinary, and other expenses the rescue incurred due to a gag order on the case. Very few people even knew these organizations had mobilized to evaluate and rescue the dogs until well after the initial placement of the animals had been completed. It was much later that the full extent of what these people did came out. There were intense negotiations with government officials to convince them that PETA was wrong.
As Gorant stated in his article, PETA and the Humane Society of the U.S. both claimed that the animals should be put down. The last 21 months has proven those organizations could not have been more wrong.
Hopefully the public at large has learned a lot from this case. One of the glaring truths arising from it is that PETA and the Humane Society of the U.S. are not dog experts.
PETA, for example, has a reputation for being an animal advocacy group. In reality, the organization is more an anti-humanity group. According to a April 28, 2008 Newsweek article, "Since 1998 PETA has killed more than 17,000 animals, nearly 85 percent of all those it has rescued." This is a very lousy track record. Euthanasia is sometimes necessary, but PETA employs it at a higher rate than most animal shelter organizations.
PETA's web site states emphatically that it supports legislation to ban Pit Bulls as follows:
"Legislatures across the country are increasingly seeking to ban pit bulls in an effort to crack down on dogfighting and prevent attacks by pit bulls. PETA supports legislation that bans the breeding of pit bulls, just as we support any spay/neuter legislation as the most effective way to combat the tragic companion animal overpopulation problem. We also support pit bull bans, as long as they include a grandfather clause allowing all living dogs who are already in good homes and well cared for to live the remainder of their lives safely and peacefully." - From PETA's website, About PETA > Hot Topics > PETA's Position on Pit Bull Bans
In essence, PETA has no regard for the freedom and liberty for humans that this country was founded upon. It is an organization hell-bent on taking away your right to eat meat, to own animals as pets or live stock, and values the overall animal kingdom over the individual welfare of any individual, be they human or animal.
PETA's terrorist tactics of throwing red paint on people and writing extortion letters to animal research facilities have been down-played over the years, and their dead-wrong assumption regarding the highly publicised Vick dogs should be displayed often to educate the public regarding the organization's ignorance and blatant disregard for the welfare of individual animals.
Beyond Pit Bulls, PETA attacks other animal rescue organizations. They have repeatedly harassed and published misinformation about G.W. Exotic Animal Park in Oklahoma and others who provide no kill rescue centers for exotic animals that have been mistreated or acquired by unscrupulous exotic animal collectors. PETA, instead of assisting these organizations, attempts to destroy them.
Don't contribute to PETA. Send your financial aid to organizations that see the individual value of the animals. like BADRAP, instead.

Post a CommentGrrr....ok, in an attempt to control my emotions over PETA and Breed Selective Legislation, I am simply going to say "thank you", instead of ranting and raving like the mad woman I can be when it comes to this subject ;)
I never have liked Pit Bulls, Timothy. I've always been a Shih Tzu lady, myself. Mine is the perfect writer's dog: she doesn't interrupt me unless she has to potty, and when I move to another room, here comes "Boo"! I've had Shih Tzus for the last 30 years, and I love them! No, I don't support PETA!
Learned something I didn't know about PETA here. Thanks.
Thank you so much for sharing this Timothy, and I LOVE the photo!
Politics aside, I am so glad the dogs have found new homes and are able to function.
Oh, and I LOVE the picture, too!
Ingrid Newkirk and the leadership of PETA are psychos! I am an avid animal lover; more apt to cry if one of my pets die than if an actual human dies, and I think they go WAY too far. I think they sought euthanasia for Vick's dogs to compound the tragedy of the situation, thereby making him look more sinister ("See, they had to be put to sleep because of him!") I think they care more about dictating pet owner's lives to them than they ever do about the safety and comfort of animals (jus' my 'pinion, tho!) Great article, sir!
