Vick's Baby Rub Review

Although it Worked Well I Would Prefer Something More Natural

I am very, very grateful that my son is not sick often. As I am typing this I am also knocking on my wooden desk, I certainly don't want to jinx his health. In all seriousness though I really couldn't be happier about the fact that my son, who is twenty-five months old has maybe been sick a half of a dozen times in his life. I owe this mainly to his extending breastfeeding, my healthy diet while I am lactating and his healthy diet of solid foods. The last time that he had a cold I knew it was the worse that he had yet to have. He wasn't yet two at the time and old enough that I felt confident getting him some Vick's Vapor Rub. I had a friend pick it up for me while me and my son stayed at home. The product that my friend brought back was Vick's Baby Rub.

I was unaware of the fact that the Vick's company offered a vapor rub made especially for babies but I was glad. I was eager to read the age restrictions of the original Vick's Vapor Rub, to see if it said it could be used on children under the age of two. Seeing that they made a product specifically for babies made me feel better about using it and its age restrictions were that the rub could be used on children three months and older. My son had not been three months in over a year so I felt good about using this product on him. He had been with this cold for a day or two already and after using the Vick's Baby Rub I saw a decrease in his congestion. I was very glad that I decided to get a vapor rub for him.

There was something that kind of bugged me about the Vick's Baby Rub though, and I wouldn't be being honest if I didn't mention it. The ingredients of the vapor rub are petrolatum, fragrance, aloe extract, eucalyptus oil, lavender oil and rosemary oil. I really see no reason for fragrance in medicine and I was very disappointed that the rub was a petroleum based product. I took all of this in to consideration in deciding whether or not I would use it again. My conclusion did not come quickly but I feel good about what I decided to do. The little jar that was less than two ounces was only a few dollars but money didn't play a big part of my decision, what else was available did though.

With a sick child in the house I couldn't exactly run off to the nearest health food store to see if they had a vapor rub that was not petroleum based. The Vick's Baby Rub was clearly soothing my son, making him feel better and didn't show any physical signs of concern. Thus I continued to use the vapor rub until my son was better, a few days later. Then I placed the jar in our medicine cabinet and went to the internet in search of a more natural product. I found that there are other options that have very natural ingredients. My plan is to do a little further research and choose another option. I will keep the Vick's Baby Rub on hand though, in the event that I feel that my son really needs it and I don't yet have a replacement, I still have it on hand. I would recommend getting this if you can't find something without petroleum in it and your toddler or baby is in need of some vapor rub. Otherwise I would suggest that you find something more natural.
