Victoria, British Columbia is a burgeoning film centre, with several features showing around this beautiful city beginning Monday, December 27. Centrally known for hosting the week long Victoria Film Festival in the first week of February, Victoria is also important for displaying multiple movie houses in and around this city. The week of Monday, December 27 to Sunday, January 1 hosts an assortment of holiday film fare, off center spiritual revolutionary pictures, and second showings of comedic Hollywood blockbusters. Check out the news on film for this week as we start at the Eric Martin Theatre and travel to the inner harbour for the full IMAX experience.

Monday, December 27

Movie Mondays continue at the Eric Martin Theatre, with a special showing of "Micmacs" from director Jean-Pierre Jeunet ("Amelie"). "Micmacs" is a "David and Goliath" (Movie Monday) styled story, which puts several outcasts up against a nefarious group of arms dealers. The film stars Danny Boon, Andre Dussollier, and Nicolas Marie. Catch this showing, in French with English subtitles, at 6:30 pm, this day only.

Tuesday, December 28

The Roxy Theatre in old town Victoria will be hosting second showings of several major Hollywood blockbusters this day. "Megamind" is a fantasy film for little or older kids and the Roxy will show this much loved film at 2:00 pm. Also showing at the Roxy this day is the comedy "Morning Glory" starring Rachel McAdams and Harrison Ford. This laugh-out-loud satire of the news business begins at 7:00 pm and shows throughout the week. Another comedy titled "Due Date" starring Robert Downey Jr. will also show this date as part of a double feature, at 8:50. Remember that the Roxy Theatre is one of the only cinemas to still host 2 for 1 Tuesdays and this means that your special date will get in for free!

Wednesday, December 29

The IMAX theatre in Victoria, British Columbia will continue with a showing of "The Light Before Christmas" on this day. There is one showing only of this title, at 12:00 pm. This is a short imaginative, animated tale, where two children become part of the classic poem" The Night Before Christmas." Take the whole family to enjoy this one!

Thursday, December 30

The pro-Socialist Camas Bookstore will be hosting a screening of the 1970s picture "The Holy Mountain." This is a religious themed picture, which will only be suitable to a few, but this Alejandro Jodorowsky film has received praise from critics. Visit the Monday Magazine for more info' on this one time showing.

Saturday, January 1

The IMAX Theatre will be one of the only movie entertainment houses showing films beginning in the New Year. However, their selection continues to be exciting, with "The Ultimate Wave Tahiti" bringing in 2011. This documentary focuses in on professional surfers Kelly Slater and Raimana Van Bastolaer as they go through a harrowing hydro filled journey filled with passion for thirty foot waves. This show is hosted at 5:00 pm only; so get there early.

Sunday, January 2

The New Year continues with a bit of a bang, as the feature "Hubble" will be shown at the IMAX. This film, narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio, follows astronauts to the "Hubble" Telescope. Here, these space adventurers are captured by the IMAX Space Team, as they outfit the telescope for further visions of the cosmos. There will be several showings of this award winning film beginning at 10:00 am and continuing at 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm. Space junkies need to check out this film.

Stay tuned to this site as we look at upcoming films in the New Year and a little ahead to February and the Victoria Film Festival. George A.
