I remember the household name Richard Petty, as I grew up. A man who raced his way to victory over 200 times. The 43 racing car was well known in the traid area. Who would've thought, that his grandson would come up with the idea of a childrens' camp. Not, just any childrens' camp though but, a camp for children with all illnesses.
When Adam Petty was 19 years old, he volunteered at a childrens' camp. Adam dreamed of a camp for children at Level Cross, N.C. Adam went to the bank one day and asked for $3,000,000,000 to start Victory Junction. Adam's Mom and Dad told him to go at it slowly because, of the commitment. Kyle and Patty Petty were not surprised to hear that Adam was at the bank. Adam was told that he would have to get sponsors for the camp. Richard Petty gave Adam the 100 acres to start Victory Junction. The triad was devastated at losing Adam Petty, at such a young age. He was thought to be the next 200 plus winner of races. Today, Patty Petty runs Victory Junction in remembrance of Adam Petty. You can schedule a tour of Victory Junction on Tuesday- Fridays from 10am-2pm.
When you enter Victory Junction, there is a play area on the right. It was donated by the Labonte family. This is a place where brothers and sisters, of the campers, can relax.
The cabins sleep 8 children on one side and 8 adults on the left side of the cabins. Each camper has his or her own volunteer. The volunteers take care of 1 child per 1 volunteer. Each cabin is donated by different race car tracks, all over the country. Some of them are Dover, Lowe's Motor speedway, Daytona, and New Hampshire to name a few.
Each cabin has a blanket and teddy bear on each bed. Each child goes home with a blanket and teddy bear. Blankets and teddy bears can be donated to Victory Junction at anytime. Each cabin has a large bathroom, with wheelchair access available. They are also equipped to take care of Ventilator patients. This is a much deserved releif to parents with Chronically ill children. The peace of knowing that there are doctors and Nurses around the clock to care for their children, mean the world to them. Children can receive Dialysis treatments, breathing treatments or Chemotherapy, while at the camp.
The pool area has a giant blue motorcycle slide. A hot house sets to the left of the pool. Children with Cancer or Sicklecell Anemia, can go into the hot house to warm up. Wheelchairs can be pushed into the edge of the pool.
The silver Theatre is where volunteers and 123 campers meet at the opening of Summer weeks. With a large Theatre screen, movies are showed for the campers. There is also a talent show at the end of the week. If the children do not want to be in the talent show, they can ride on the giant polar bear, to join in the fun. Each building is a different bright, bold color. The colors range from orange, yellow, blue, red, green, etc.
Victory Lanes has 4 lanes for children to bowl on. Silver tables and red bar stools line the right side of the wall. Video games line the left hand side of the wall.
Harris Teeter donated a snack bar house. At the house children can get cotton candy, popcorn, or anything else they want to eat.
Nascar simulators are available for children to have a chance to learn about race cars. There is a large gym, indoor baseball field, and horse barn. Campers can learn how to ride horses, ride on a zipline, do Arts and crafts, go on hot air balloon rides, play putt-putt, and learn how to shoot a bow and arrow. Serveral of the race car drivers have donated buildings at Victory Junction. Micheal Waltrip, Tony Stewart, Kurt Busch, and Jimmie Johnson are just a few driver's who make this dream a reality. The camp now has sponsors like, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Pro Bass Shop, and Best Western. It cost $2500 for a camper per week but, these children do not have to pay for camp. Thanks to the Petty's, many children have surpassed that 200th victory in their lives.
On the weekends families can come to Victory Junction in the Fall. During the Summer children are dropped off on Monday's and picked up on Friday.
