Video Game Innovations: 1st Person Shooters

Bruce Bostwick
This type of game play became popular with two of the most known franchises in Wolfestein 3-D and Doom. With it, it brought a new perspective in game play. These games really set the standard on how a 1st person shooter should be performed and many games often intimidated but very few ever duplicated. Other games had used this trend on the PC with games such as Blake Stone, Rise of the Triad, and The Heretic. While only The Heretic didn't use guns like what is associated mainly with some 1st person shooter games, it did offer that perspective of playing it like a real person would. The plots were pretty simple to be honest. When it came to Wolfenstein, you had to get BJ out of the castle by killing the Nazis. There was a sequel made called Spear of Destiny, which is more or less the same concept just trying to capture the Spear and face off with the evil guardian, the Angel of Death as he is known as.

Of course, like with any innovation there have been some games that are just bad to say the least. There is this game called Super Noah's Ark 3-D, which is more or less a clone of Wolfenstein but using Noah and it was made for younger kids. There was no blood shed in the entire game. Wolfenstein and Doom happen to be games at the time to be remade to other systems like the Super Nintendo, Genesis, and other systems. There of course was newer games called the Return of Wolfenstein made for the X-Box with a hidden game, the Classic Wolfenstein 3-D and of course Doom 3, which is more or less based off the movie Doom.

Microsoft caught on and had perhaps the latest in that incarnation with the Halo series for the X-Box. Those games in particular really add something extra to it while having that 1st person shooter element but adding a sense of realism and cut scenes. Definitely something that really made this series pretty good. There will be a 3rd game made for the current system the X-Box 360 and it does have promise. It is suppose to be the last one that follows the series because of probably not wanting to overdo it. That would be the main guess and probably a very good one at that. The plot of this involves Halo and having to kill everything that is out to get you from the Covenants to the Flood, so much action and sometimes the Covenant will attack someone else and the best thing to do is actually let them kill each other making it easier. An element with that feature similar to Doom, considering that sometimes enemies will shoot and try to kill each other before bothering to get involved. There is no concept of lives in this one so once you die; you start back at a starting point before whatever killed you did. To really push this game a step further that could very well spawn into its own life and be regarded as a game up there with those classic games, it has an online play that can be done either the PC or X-Box version depending on an internet connection, the X-Box has a service called X-Box Live so that could be played online through X-Box.

Without the classic games Wolfenstein and Doom, there would most likely be no Halo. No one would regard them as the founding fathers of the entire perspective of the 1st person shooter games. It is actually possible that someone could have developed the art and perfected it even more but that is more or less going to be known as a what if. What's done was done in the early 1990s and well into the 2000s. Who knows what other games will pull it off and be able to continue this trend?
