Video Game Review: FlingSmash for the Wii

I had never heard of FlingSmash until I found it sitting on the shelf of my local Game Stop. Had it not been for the bonus controller, I probably would have let this game sit. For $50, you get the game and a Wii Remote Plus. I bought it and took it home, eager to see if I had made a mistake or bought something worthwhile.

Setting up the Remote Plus was easy. Sitting through the storyline of FlingSmash was not. I couldn't find any way to stop the storyline and get to the start of the game.

The object of FlingSmash is to save a princess from the evil overlord by collecting pearls that are hidden throughout the island. You are to smash through barriers and fight bosses, all the while trying to keep your superhero moving ahead so that he won't get eaten by dragons that are chasing him. Sound like fun? For the most part.

I thought that the controls were a bit whacky. For instance, I would move the controller in one direction, only to have it move in the opposite direction on the screen. I thought this was just my inexperience at playing Wii games, but it seems like this is an issue with many people who reviewed this game on Amazon.

This game is definitely kid friendly. Adults may get tired of the childish sounds and special effects quickly. I know that I turned off the music and sound because they began to grate on me. This didn't stop me from learning what I needed to do in order to progress through the game.

One of the things that I liked about the game is the ability to switch between your left and right hand. That way, if one arm gets tired from swinging, you can use the other. I also like the fact that you can play a two-player game. I have yet to test this out because I can't get my teens to play with me, but I think my 8 year-old nephews will really enjoy this game.

Overall, I enjoyed the amount of the game that I played. The concept is simple. I liked the graphics, but hated the sound. The controls could use some improvement so that the hero actually does what you want him or her to do. I do not regret my purchase. If anything, I have an extra remote that my kids can use when they have a friend over. Recommended, but not for children under three.
