Video Games and Movies Haven't Seemed to Mix

Bruce Bostwick
Games and movies have been made and some of the games and the movies have not seemed to find for the most part a mix. It had been like known as mixing water and oil it just doesn't mix. The gaming and movie industries attract different audiences each with different results. What happens when they are actually combined? Well, the results have not turned out to be the greatest so there have been a few exceptions but 1st, the discussion about good movies that didn't turn out to be so great games.

One game that has to be brought up was E.T. the movie for the Atari 2600. The movie was actually very good. I seem to recall watching and thought it was good and then to do what I think is a 1st, E.T. was one of the 1st games to try to convert from a movie to a game. The hype and expectations were very high at the time but it had become a major failure. It was developed for 6 weeks, probably a record for any video game ever made. It was to be released in the Holidays of 1982, giving the project about 2 months to get it done but developed in 6 weeks. I have actually played this and I don't think it was a great game. You could there was some potential but there wasn't enough time to really develop it. I believe it had a bit of a longer time span to actually complete the game itself, it probably would have been a bigger success and not be the game that symbolized the Video Game Crash of 1983. Back to the Future was actually a pretty decent movie along with the sequels but then the games weren't that great. I had tried it but I just didn't really get into it and thought it didn't belong with the movie and didn't really follow it. I also remember a couple games with Ghostbusters and the 1st one however really had no following of it. It was nothing more than a Ghostbusters logo playing the Ghostbusters theme the whole game. There was a sequel to both the movie and the game but I haven't played it nor have I seen it.

Another movie for that matter is the Superman movies. Now I've only played a handful of games but the Superman ones have never had a decent game. The reason it is because probably the movie people aren't into video games or the game designers aren't really into the project. It's a mystery to everyone and it's a shame that such a major name like Superman hasn't been given the justice that it richly deserves.

The only movie I can possibly think of when it comes to that adaptation was the Super Mario Bros. movie that I distantly remember. To me, it didn't even really have much reference to the Super Mario Bros. game. The plot I felt really made little to no sense. There really wasn't a Mushroom Kingdom and I don't recall Koopa in the game actually being human. That to me actually little to no sense because I could have sworn he was a lizard. It wasn't so much the actors that were the problem; it was really more so that it had little to no relevance to the Super Mario Bros. franchise. There was no problem with the addition of Yoshi as he is apart of the Mario series. If it had been animated, it probably would have done better as long as the setting was in the Mushroom Kingdom with the Goombas, Koopa Troopas, and all the other familiar Mario characters. As far as Resident Evil goes, I've yet to see the movie or play the game but I would imagine it not working out and doing it justice. There was a movie that was on Final Fantasy 7 and a game as well. I've only seen the movie and I thought it was well done and I think with it being in CGI format, it did it justice and I'm curious on how the actual game is. It does look promising and might be a game that does actually say that not all movies to game conversions fail miserably.

How about the Ninja Turtles series? While it may not have followed the games, for the most part I found them pretty entertaining even up to the most recent turtles movie TMNT. The games themselves I've only played the NES, Genesis, SNES, and Game Boy versions and I enjoyed them. The newer games I haven't seen so much of so I can't really comment on that. I think I could safely say that the Ninja Turtles was probably one of the only series that could pull it off if done correctly. True, the movies and games didn't match each other but at least it was a bold effort that and shows that it can be done depending on the elements and who is in charge.

The only reason I can think of why it hasn't worked out for both sides in ways is because of the different audience. I've never quite figured it out but I think if the game designers and the movie producers worked together on the stuff, it will turn out to be great in my own honest opinion.

New movies coming out like the HALO movie based off the popular Halo series on the X-Box. Will that be any good and could it break that stigma in some degree even further that a game converting to a movie can go together like bread and butter? I don't know for sure. As long as it's animated, which I think it will be but not sure, I think it could turn out to do it some justice. Likewise can a game be made successfully after a good movie? Well, I haven't any of the Spiderman ones that have come out yet or the new Fantastic Four game so until I play those, I really won't be able to comment yet.

It is interesting to think about this but I do believe it is actually possible for it to actually work. Both the game designers and the movie producers should work together on the projects if one is based off the other. I have hope for the movie HALO and I actually look forward to that.

  • E.T. was one of the 1st movies to venture into the Video Game World
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is maybe one of the few that can actually do well in both the video game and movie world.

I have heard my sons talk about the inconsistancies in the Harry Potter games.
