This hard qi gong exercise is used to teach student how to channel chi to the hands for grabbing techniques, as well as to strengthen the muscles used for gripping. Use reverse abdominal breathing (lower abdomen pulled in as you inhale, and pushed out as you exhale), inhale as your relaxed arm is stretched out, exhale forcefully as grab to the side tensing all your muscles, keep the forearm strongly tensed as you gradually close the grip and bring your arm back to the waist.
