Get this person's set of torn paper photoshop brushes
http://colorburned.com/2009/07/torn-paper-edges-38-high-resolution-photoshop-brushes.html and then use the brush to create the selection area. This can be simple select, delete or create a mask from the selection. Then add a drop shadow. Basically the same process as the video but without the need to manually drag the eraser around the picture.

Why not use a mask instead of erase? That way if you make a mistake you can easily fix it.

This is so simple once you know the right approach. Thanks!
