    I just shortened a pair of laces following this procedure and it worked fine. I used a lighter as I didn't have a heat gun and had no problems. Thanks for the idea.

    I just did this after watching the vid. It worked. Found heat-shrink tubes at Radio Shack.
    Tip 1: Pull the lace so it's just right on one side and very long on the other. This way, you'll only need to replace one aglet per shoelace.
    Tip 2: Don't overheat the tube. It warps and melts.
