Shriners in the 2010 St. Patrick's Day Parade in San Antonio, Texas
Have You Ever Seen a Shriner Hillbillie?
Shriner clowns, Shriner musicians, and Shriners on fast go-karts... these are all traditional parade performers in cities around the US. Regardless of the occasion, holiday, or time of year, one can expect to see at least one group of Shriners joining the parade. While visiting San Antonio on March 13, 2010 we were able to watch the St. Patrick's Day street parade through the downtown area, including in front of the Alamo. The Shriners of the San Antonio area dominated a large portion of the parade, entertaining the crowd in a number of ways. In this video you will see an antique fire engine complete with the old-style fire engine sirens, an old hurty gurty pipe organ played by a skilled Shriner musician, a group of traditional Shriners go-kart drivers in some fast-moving formations, and the Shriner's hillbillies promoting cousin Bessie Lou for possum queen. The St. Patrick's Day parade at San Antonio wasn't spectacular, but it was a nice one all the same.
