Having spent many holidays in European countries such as Spain, France, Greece and Egypt in what I call the resort shelves of a shopping isle, it is nice have a little place of character and honest charm.
The resort shelves as I refer to are those places that are full of 'booze cruise culture' and party until I drop' activities. This is not the case in the scenic and peaceful settings of Dalyan in Turkey.
I guess it was the need to have a relaxing holiday rather than one of 'Blackpool in the sun' that attracted my girlfriend and I to Dalyan. It was certainly worth searching around the internet for days looking for a place with just that little bit of something different.
Dalyan is set between the warm climate of the Mediterranean Sea and the vast lake of Koycegiz Golu, it is also on the banks of the quiet River Dalyan Bogazi. The magic of the area is in its surrounding valleys, waterways, landscapes and forestry, also Dalyan's charming residents which are a mixture of foreign nationals and native Turkish. People actually come here on holiday and stay!
We resided at the wonderful Villa Dalyan, a place that we will no doubt be returning to again and again in the future. The building is an amazing Mediterranean style small apartment complex, fully kitted out for self catering and relaxing. And what is better after a jaunt around the local shops or a spot of turtle spotting on the river, than a peaceful bit of relaxation in beautiful sunshine by a clean and quiet swimming pool?
Valla Dalyan as you would expect from apartments, houses around 16 but when we arrived we hardly noticed anybody there. It was so quiet, yet we knew of people staying in the apartment as we had been told so by the very courteous and helpful management. We occasionally bumped into two other couples staying at Villa Dalyan by the pool or as we entered our apartment, but as for any noise or typical behavior of drunken rowdiness there was absolutely nothing. Quite a pleasant surprise really as we did expect some form of holiday behavior, but no just fantastic charm and peace.
Once we grabbed our connection, a local friendly taxi driver who knew exactly where to go to get us to our destination, it took only 20 minutes or so to get to Villa Dalyan from the airport at Dalaman. We passed some wonderful sights on the way, and saw some wonderful apartments and scenery.
With my girlfriend and I being from the UK, we found it a luxury to have some English programs on TV when we got back from drinking at one of the bars in the centre of Dalyan. Okay Dalyan center is slightly more on the lively side, but absolutely nothing in comparison to certain offerings from the Spanish or Greek resorts. I say lively it's more a few bars, a touch of shopping, local trades and food places. We could have a quiet drink and eat in one of the fine local restaurants without any hindrance from lively teenagers or binged out adults, which we purposefully tried to avoid on our holiday this time around.
Food is not a problem, there are many local treats to be had in the form of a small market which is about 5 minutes walk from Villa Dalyan. There are some restaurants and bars dotted around the outskirts of Dalyan, but in the main they are only a 10 minute walk from the apartments.
We loved our time in Dalyan, as I said we will be returning for many years to come, and would love to stay at the private Villa Margarita, if we can be quick enough with a booking this year.
All in all you would not be disappointed if you take you holiday this year at Villa Dalyan, it is not just a holiday it is a whole new experience. It is no wonder they call it a 'lost corner of Paradise!'
To see where you could be staying this year just visit Villa Daylan at: http://villadalyan.co.uk/ or Villa Dalyan
A perfect 10 from us.
