Vince Young's Move to Eagles to Have Vick-Like Results?

Robert Dougherty

The Vince Young rumors started in mid-week, officially picking up steam after the Titans released their former starter and the Eagles traded their old backup. With Kevin Kolb now gone, Young is now free and clear to back up Michael Vick, which he may officially be able to do Friday. According to the NFL Network, Philadelphia is ready to sign a one-year deal with yet another controversial quarterback.

Of course, Young's transgressions are nothing compared to Vick's, and his road back won't nearly be as difficult. While he stayed out of jail and didn't get involved in animal cruelty, he was run out of Tennessee because of what he did, or didn't do, on the field.

The Titans gave him every opportunity to be a superstar, yet despite a 30-18 career record, he was derailed by injuries, questions about his work ethic, and battles with Jeff Fisher. Last year was the final straw, as the Titans collapsed, Fisher was ultimately let go, and Young was officially released for it all Thursday.

However, the Eagles need a backup, even though Young was hoped to be the next great starter after his college career in Texas. Therefore, like Vick did two years ago, he has to start over on the bench in Philadelphia. But following Vick's blueprint would ultimately pay off, since he got back on the field and excelled after Donovan McNabb was traded and Kolb got hurt.

Andy Reid is now making a reputation out of taking on young, controversial, running quarterbacks who blew their first chances to be superstars. It only paid off with Vick to a point, since Philadelphia lost in the first round of the playoffs and couldn't protect its mobile quarterback. If the offensive line doesn't improve, then Young could find himself back on the field soon enough -- which for the moment, doesn't sound completely promising.

This isn't the first NFL reclamation project this week, as the New England Patriots started two of them by acquiring Albert Haynesworth and Chad Ochocinco Thursday. When Bill Belichick and company bring on a troubled star, it has resulted in Super Bowls and an undefeated season, as it did when they got Randy Moss. But the Eagles are not the Patriots, as is quite evident by their championship gap.

Haynesworth and Ochocinco stand to make a more immediate impact for the Patriots while the Eagles have to hope Young doesn't have to. Vick rose from the bench and much harsher circumstances to become a star again last season, but not everyone can be him.

Young needs the Eagles more than the team needs him right now, yet that could change in an instant. But he never showed the kind of explosive flash the old and new Vick had, so hopes for his redemption have to be uncertain at the moment.
