Vincent Jackson Trade Talks Continue After Chargers Reject Offers

Ben Wood
As of 4 p.m. ET, wide receiver Vincent Jackson is still a member of the San Diego Chargers, and will remain suspended through the first six weeks of the season. The Chargers had many offers for Jackson, who was suspended for three weeks following an off-season DUI arrest. After the Chargers placed Jackson on the exempt list when contract negotiations fell through, he became ineligible to play until Week 7 unless traded before 4 p.m. Wednesday. The Chargers rejected trade offers from multiple teams, and appear ready to let Jackson sit out for possibly the entire season if a trade agreement can't be reached.

Jackson's trade situation is not unique, however. Many other players have gone through arduous trade processes in recent years. Here are the top three:

Roy Oswalt

Earlier this year, baseball saw its own drawn-out trade situation. Roy Oswalt, the ace of the Houston Astros' pitching staff, was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies after months of speculation. A deal was difficult to put together because Oswalt had a full no-trade clause, while the Astros asked for high-level prospects and seemed wary of trading Oswalt to the St. Louis Cardinals, who play in the Central Division with Houston. The deal was eventually made when the Phillies gave in to the Astros' demands and sent pitcher J.A. Happ and two high-level prospects to Houston.

Brett Favre

In March of 2008, Brett Favre announced his retirement from football. Five months later, after attempting to reverse his decision to retire, he was traded to the New York Jets for a conditional draft pick. The Favre trade followed several unproductive meetings the star quarterback had with the Packers organization, who were unwilling to give Favre his starting quarterback job back after he decided to not retire. After the Packers realized that the relationship with Favre could not be saved, they quickly shipped him to the Jets. Favre's saga wasn't done, with Favre retiring again after one season with the Jets, only to reverse his decision and sign with the Minnesota Vikings before the 2009 NFL season.

Albert Haynesworth

Albert Haynesworth hasn't been traded yet, but that doesn't mean that talks haven't happened. Trade talks have surrounded Haynesworth since before the NFL draft in April, yet the Washington Redskins haven't been able to find a team that will take him. The Redskins have been unhappy with Haynesworth's effort on the field, but asking another team to pick up most of Haynesworth's contract and give up prospects in return has proved to be too high a cost for other teams.

Unfortunately for Jackson, his situation most closely mirrors Haynesworth's. He currently is feuding with the organization he plays for, and his team has rejected all of the trade offers put forth so far. The Chargers have until the NFL trade deadline on Oct. 19 to trade Jackson, but Jackson's off-field issues and continued holdout have reduced the potential return for the San Diego Chargers. Only time will tell if these issues will also prevent a trade from actually happening.
