Vinegar Hill Contamination Investigation Underway
Neighborhood: Vinegar Hill
New York, NY 11201
United States of America
Vinegar Hill residents were notified via a mailer that testing for contamination would begin at a former Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) site on Front Street. The site had previously stored and distributed gas from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) and Department of Health will oversee National Grid's testing of soil, sediments and water for possible MGP compounds from the site. Indoor air sampling may be done as well.

According to NYSDEC, some of the waste from former MGP sites remains due to leaked coal tar. More information on the old gas plant on Front Street can be found here. The site's borders include York, Gold and Bridge Streets.

Neighbors can call the National Grid's hotline at (718) 403-3002 to ask questions or comment on the upcoming testing.
