Brooklyn, NY 11201
United States of America
Ever since the on-site Laundromat closed last year, hundreds of residents in the neighborhood's public housing project have had to walk a mile just to wash their clothes. The housing project, Farragut Houses, is run by the city and is home to more than 3,400 residents in its ten towers. There are now zero laundry facilities within the 20-block radius.
The closest two Laundromats are both on Myrtle Avenue - a 25-minute walk away. One facility is at North Portland and the other is at Carlton Avenue.
This trek to Myrtle Avenue hasn't always been the case. The housing project had a basement laundry facility at 191 Sand Street but was closed last year for not being up to code. There is no immediate plan to put a new laundry facility into the Farragut Houses.
Many residents blame gentrification for the lack of laundry facilities. Most of the new luxury buildings feature washer and dryers in the units thus making the need for the Laundromats nil.
Currently, local residents are writing their city council representatives to see if there is a solution to this problem. In the meantime, they just have to walk for their wash.
