Vintage American Flag Craft Project: Vintage Tin American Flag

Ann Siper
This vintage inspired American flag craft project makes the perfect patriotic decoration fo your front door, any room in your home, or even on a stake in the garden. This is an adult patriotic craft project. Kids and metal cutting crafts simply do not mix.

To Make Your Own Vintage American Flag Craft Project You Will Need:

Corrugated Tin

Rivets

Riveter

Paint

Paint Brush

Grommets

Blow Torch

Mask

To get started you want cut out your sheet of corrugated tin to about 2 feet tall and 3 feet wide. Corrugate tin is simple what like to call a zig zag tin. It has a textured surface that is wavy or in a zig zag pattern. You will find it in the roofing department at your local home improvement store.

Now, sand the edges (wear gloves please) to make them smooth.

Prime out the whole piece by dry brushing the surface with primer. This means streaky, do not coat perfectly.

Now, use this same dry brushing technique to apply the blue paint on in the top left field for the stars. You may want to tape this off.

Now, dry brush on the red stripes on your vintage Memorial Day decorations. Let this dry.

Now, on to the aging process. You will need to wear a mask from this point on as well as work outside. I also recommend protective eye gear.

Go ahead and install a grommet or a rivet in each corner. You want to use a riveter, which is a hand held tool for installing the rivets. They are found in the screw and nail section at the hardware store and cost less than $20. I bet you will use it for other project s in the future!

If you don't want to buy that, then punch holes in the four corners with nails. Install a grommet over top by gluing it into plate. The grommets can be bought at the craft store or fabric store, but are meant to be pressed onto fabric, so you will not be able to do that. Glue instead.

Now, break out the blow torch and wear that ask. Use the lit blow torch ot start scorching the edges of the vintage looking American flag first. Then work towards the inside.

This is how you will age and darken the whole vintage Memorial Day craft.

Once finished you can hang no yoru front porch, lean on the mantel over your fireplace or even hang in a window to create privacy!
